Trying to determine what year my NACRA 5.8 is....  Bottom

  • Not sure if this should move to the technical forum or not.

I do not see a TRRD # at the back of the pontoons. They are all black with a slight recess. When I remove the port covers, I see filber glass, not foam.
I'm thinking early 80s... any insight from the Genius'

  • Geronimo,
Reading your post I get the impression you were looking for the number on the black transom. It's not there. It would be on the top of the hull, near the transom, at the top edge, parallel to the hull seam.

Looking at the picture you posted, it looks like something is covering up where you would find the number.

  • Greetings Erice,
I just read through your register and want to offer some additional information. The foam core legacy boats (1985+) that were manufactured in U.S. did have visible seams. Nacra brand boats manufactured in other countries (i.e.- Australia) are a completely different animal. Hope that helps.

    Philip,

Is that black transom stock? Was it just a style thing? It doesn't appear to be black gelcoat. What years were done that way?

My 1988 nacra 18sq has the same black inset transomes.

  • Nope, take that back, my 5.5 has transoms like that and it is a foam core. The foam core 5.0s do not look like that, though, IIRC.

Yes. No gelcoat, just painted. I've seen some of the newer legacy boats with gelcoat, but don't know if the factory or someone else did it. The mold halves did not have transoms. Don't get this confused with the newer design (500,570,580, etc.) which is a whole different boat. Easiest way to know is the new boats have the newer beams (D shaped) and smooth gelcoat transoms and newer rudder castings.

I see a sticker on the right hull but it is so faded I can't tell...

    Thanks everyone.
  • thanks mumpp, noted

shouldn't be a sticker, the TRRAxxxx number should have been moulded into the gelcoat on the top, outer corner of the hull just behind the rear beam

Spot on Erice, although then they just carved the numbers in. The newer (let call them non-legacy boats) now have the VIN's on the rear starboard transom and they are actually stamped by a plate in the mold into the gel coat. I going to get some pictures of VIN's to Damon and he will set up something we can all add to.

All the 5.2's I've seen are built that way,(both the ones I had were) but not the 5.0 or 5.7's
Here is the end of my '84,(old style) 5.7.

The newer foam cored 5.0 ('88) has the identical transom, both have visible seams.

That is exactly how the '88 5.0 is. I have heard that some of the 5.0's were done UNDERNEATH the beam, where it sits in the moulded hull depression.

  • This topic is a great example of "a picture is worth a thousand words (or posts)".

I've created a new album in the Beachcats Identification album for pictures of how each model beachcat displays it's Hull Identification Number (HIN).

    http://thebeachcats.com/pictures/?g2_itemId=103242

Please, create a separate album for each model and upload pictures that include enough of the surrounding boat that someone unfamiliar with the boat could understand where the numbers are located. Multiple pictures if needed to make it clear or if the same model had different locations and styles over the years.

    Thanks,

  • Good idea, I'll get it together the next rainy day.
In the meantime, it turns out ERICE & Philip were both correct, re the early models. IT seems Nacra changed the method several times.
This boat is an early 5.2 that we broke the hull in half. The photo was taken when parting it out, originally to show the Hobie Rudders...which went to New Mexico I believe.
I you expand the photo fully, you can just make out the VIN, on top of the hull, between "grip strip" & transom. It was embossed during the original moulding, starts with TRR. Both the early 5.2 were like this, except the other one the VIN # was just below this photo, on the SIDE of the hull.
The year was 70 something, the last digit was either a 3 or an 8.
This also shows clearly Philips comment about the ends having no gelcote.
