Big Beachcats: Orange II and Bruno Peyron Move to Code Orange

Added by damonAdmin on Jun 08, 2006 - 10:10 PM

Newport, Thursday 8th June 2006 - Frenchman Bruno Peyron, the skipper of Orange II, has moved to "Code Orange " today, which means that Peyron and the crew of the giant maxi-catamaran may set sail in the next few days on their attempt at the North Atlantic crossing record, between New York (USA) and The Lizard (GB).

According to the conditions that have been observed in the area by the shore-based weather team, a window of opportunity looks to be appearing around New York, which could allow them to start sometime between Wednesday 14th June at 20h and Thursday 15th June at 13h.

Final talks will be taking place tomorrow between Bruno Peyron, Roger Nilson (Orange II's onboard navigator) and the shore-based weather team to decide whether or not they will move to green code, signalling a start from New York in the next 72 hours.

The crew on stand-by is due to include 10 people, some of whom took part in the previous attempt at the North Atlantic and the around-the-world record. The complete line-up of the crew will be revealed by Bruno Peyron in New York, the day before the start.
Footnote: Reminder : The Atlantic record has been held since October 2001 by the American yachtsman Steve Fossett, on board his maxi-catamaran PlayStation, with a time of 4 days, 17 hours, 28 mins and 06 secs.
