Prindle 19 Diamond Wires  Bottom

  • Doing some restoration work on a Prindle 19 and looking for information on diamond wire tension/adjustment on this boat. I've run my diamond wires relatively loose on the Hobie 18, which allows me to de-power with rotation. Unless I am missing parts, the diamond wires are not captive on this 19. If they are run loose on this boat, I would think the unloaded side could come off the spreader and I could lose the rig on a tack.

The other option is sweep the spreaders back and prebend the mast with tension, which also could have issues.

Just looking to see if other Prindle 19 owners have diamond wires not captive on the spreaders, and what form of tension adjustment they are using.

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Quote from UK sails tuning guide,by John Holmberg 1994 prindle National Champ.

With the mast rigged on the boat, sight along the aft edge to ensure the diamond wire tension is even and mast straight.Adjust each wire as necessary to accomplish this, and then, tighten one or two turns on each side at a time, until the mast starts to pre-bend in the area of the spreaders As you look up at the mast while doing this, ensure the mast is still straight from side to side and the pre-bend should be visible- about 1/2 inch at spreaders

  • Perfect. Thank you.

As for the spreaders... Do you have anything that keeps the wires captive to the spreader, or are they held to the spreader just by tension alone?

The spreaders are wrapped to the stays tightly with seizing wire, and then taped in place with electrical or self-amalgamating tape. The Prindle Manual for the 19 shows this in detail. Search for the manual.

Here are some documents from Prindle on the two types of rig - pre-bend and soft:

  • I've looked through the online manuals for the 19 and don't see any information on the attachment of the diamond wires to the spreaders. Seizing wire and rigging tape sounds easy enough. Thanks for the help!

  • This is my new boat, and potential island cruiser once I do some sea trials. It will replace my H18 if all goes well.

  • Hmmmm...
The Prindle 18-2/19 manual here only has 19 of the forty some pages.
I'll see what I can do about that Bill.

  • Don't spend too much time on this. I've got Lance's boat at the yard to look at, and also can possibly purchase a manual online.

Note that I found all 41 pages at the link below, but still no info on the diamond wires to spreaders attachment:

    Hey Bill,
I found my old jpg scan of the manual.
Go here and look at pages 15 and 16:

  • Exactly what I was looking for! Thank's so much for the help, guys!

Since acquiring the boat, I've been working on repairing some hull damage, and am just now starting to dig into the assembly. The manual should answer all my questions, but I know where to get more answers if I need them. I want to have this boat on the water in a couple of weeks.
