Pulled the trigger - Nacra 5.2  Bottom

  • Howdy, just picked up a Nacra 5.2. Looks like it was built in 1982. The hulls seem to be in pretty good shape as are the crossbeams. The mast/boom/rudder assembly is OK. The tramp is beat, I've ordered a new one from Slosails. The sails are usable. Rigging has seen better days, but is sound. Didn't come with daggerboards.

I raced monohulls in college and since then I've sailed a decent amount, but not much time on cats. I found this one for $600, which is frankly cheaper than a kayak, so I thought this was a good time to jump into the cat scene.

    First questions:

Where do I go for new sails? I'm not planning on racing anytime soon, but don't want old world canvas either if you know what I mean....

    Daggerboards?

Where can I find the manual on this thing?

How the heck do I post a picture on this forum????? I'll gladly attach a few shots if I can figure it out.

  • Manual is in the technical help gallery. Whirlwind makes great sails for beachcats. I have 2 spare sets of original sails i can sell you for a decent price. Ec hilliard on here may have a spare set of daggerboards. If he sold his i also have a spare set that needs some glass work. I dont really want to sell them because they are hard to come by and are spares for my boat, but if you dont have another reasonable option i will consider it.

  • correction, there are daggerboards, just not true to Nacra specs. Looks like the photos worked. Safe to assume $600 is a good deal? from the looks of others, it would seem to be.

  • Hold up a bit.. Might consider puting a hold on the Tramp order.. Check out the posts here on upgrades for the boat.. Get rid of that center bar by drilling the hull straps and riviting the crossbars in place.. Get the tram fitted with jib tac lines that go underneath the tramp so you are not scraping your shin on the steel wires which are taught when you tack and change sides.. Consider grommits for the trap lines.. perhaps mounting bungi's inboard of the daggers to replace the ones that tack forward and hold the boards up.. There are lotts of things to help the rudder system. Check Wolfman's post.. He has had the sickness for some time and is a bit anal with the fix-up, but ended up with a fine fine ride!! I just finished my first year with a 5.2 and am going to make all of thosed changes.. Great boat for one-up sailing.. and a rocket !!

  • P.S. Be sure to measure the tramp.. There are two sizes depending on the vintage of the boat..

$600 ... great deal if it floats, doesnt have soft spots and sails well... not so great if it sinks or doesnt sail correct.
to hard to say from pics, but it certainly looks like it's in nice shape.

Sails: many sail lofts can produce good results, but you may want to stick with ones that are catamaran sail builders and with good track records.. (do searches on here and google)
  • Great find! You will love the boat. Very fast and fun. Think twice before removing the crossbar, though. Many N5.2/5.7 drivers here like going without, but there are still some of us, including me, who like having the bar there to have a solid footrest when heeled out. Sail her for a while with the bar. Can always be removed later, but usually a one-way mod. Agree about the jib block wires, though. I haven't done it yet, though plan to.

  • I removed the bar and put the jib wires under the tramp. Made my wife much happier. Tramp is much more comfortable now, have even slept on it.

  • Guys, you do realize that this thread was from July and it was only resurrected because blue185 was looking for confirmation on what herkyguy paid. Just sayin.

  • Update - She sailed today for the first time. I spent the winter stripping the hulls, sanding, laying epoxy, a little bit of glass, sanding, sanding, sanding, priming, painting, and slowly got her back together. The hulls are watertight. I ended up going with new rigging (shrouds, bridle, forestay) just to be on the safe side. From this site, I ended up going with Brightsides by Interlux. Thanks for answering my questions along the way. I sailed in college, but wasn't quite sure I could pull this off on my own. seeing everyone else's cats convinced me otherwise and it was a fun project.

No jib yet since the one that came with it is horrible shape, but the main is doing alright. I could desperately use some good sails. my traveler block snapped right off today (I kinda saw that coming), but still managed two hours in about ten knots of breeze.
