HELP! ....seem to have hit a dead zone on the learning curve?  Bottom

  • Have been sailing my P18 enough now that I'm comfortable solo, have the trap technique down to where I can get out on the wire without loosing it. With regards to speed though, I have noticed that no matter what I do, the P18 seems to have peaked out at around 15-18 knots, have played with both downhaul and outhaul with no success, maybe just rake the mast back a little, what say you sailors....?

  • Assuredly, you did align the rudders ? Pete
  • remove the keg of beer and lessen the weight?

Add 170' wing mast like the BMW tri?

kidding aside, how fast do you think a p18 could do in optimal condition/conditions?
20.7 mph is pretty damn fast on a 20+ year old cat design (IMO)
  • Rudders aligned, drank the beer, ditched the keg, did notice cavitation on starboard rudder at speed, will have to re-shape that rudder this winter, what else, other than new square-top sails from Kelly-Hanson?

  • One time my wife and I were sailing our H-16 in Dunedin. Winds were about 10-15 MPH, just perfect. But I just wasn't having fun. All of the other boats were passing me because the H-16 was much slower than they were. When we got back in, one of the other sailors (Andrew) asked me if I had a good time. When I told him that I didn't he said the most important sailing words anyone ever spoke.... "Get a bigger boat!!".
We upgraded to a F-18 and have been having a BLAST ever since. I would suggest you do the same. If the boat you have doesn't make the adrenalin flow occasionally, you have outgrown it (IMHO).
    Thanks Andrew!!
  • i never meant for you to get a faster boat than i have... ugggg
  • Also remeber that they guys who always kick butt are not one dimensional. They know how to set the sails & trim to develop power, but so do all the other good racers.
The consistent winners know where to point the boat, where the tides are, how to get the best start. Tactics & strategy start to become very important.
I can make my boat go pretty fast, relatively speaking, but i would be cannon fodder on the course as my knowledge of tactics, starting etc is very limited.
