Hi Guys,
Take a look at the "bolts / plate" set up someone has added to the Mast plate / step. (added to my Member - Phoenix f18 Album)
Was this done to prevent mast twist or to make stepping it a one man job? Or,..possibly the mast has slipped out of the step and scared the owner to put these there.
Thoughts?

it looks like that is the only means of raising your mast. I don't see any hinge on the mast or the cross bar so that's just your pivot point for stepping the mast.

Like Kevin says, it looks like this is a mast step link pin, might be home made? To raise the mast, the bottom of the mast is connected to the mast base using the link pin, this allows the mast to pivot as it is raised, seating it onto the mast base as it reaches vertical. You could stand on the forward beam and try dead lift the already vertical mast onto the mast base, very difficult, or do as the rest of us trailer sailors do, lay the mast fore and aft across the center of the boat, connect the mast to the mast base using the link pin and then pivot mast to vertical by whatever means untill you can connect the forestay to the bridle wires.
The mast step link pin must be disconnected once the mast has been raised, allowing the mast to rotate, usually there is a mast bearing made of Delrin? between the mast and the mast base to prevent metal on metal. Also the rigging, all stays, should be tight enough to prevent the mast from "jumping" out of the mast base for any reason, but not too tight to overstress the rig or prevent the mast from "rotating", side to side.

Hello there! I am happy to see that I am not the only Phoenix 18 owner out there! I acquired this boat from my uncle last week and really couldn't find much information on it other than what i've found here. I just wanted to ask your opinion of the boat overall. Does it sail well? I've been sailing on hobie 16s all summer long and have no experience on any vessels larger than 16 ft. I will try and post some more pictures tomorrow to give you an idea of what mine looks like but I dont really have any idea if it is seaworthy or not. HOpefully we'll get it on the water over the weekend for a trial but who knows. i appreciate any input what-so-ever!! Thanks, Dante

It is quite a nice sailing boat. Lots of volume in the hulls. I also have one and I sailed it for many years before upgrading. I still have it if anyone wants it.
The only real flaw in the design is the centerboards. They are very thin an aluminum which doesn't give any lift when going upwind. -
