  • I know it's somewhere on the site but I've not been able to find suggestions on how/where to mount a Go-Pro camera.....specifically on a Hobie 16

thanks in advance.....I know that MN3 will know where the post is
  • This may help

My advice is have several monunts and mix them on your videos, otherwise your videos look always the same. On your head is a very good optiopn, don't forget about that one.

Search on this site for camera mount, and a few variations of that phrase

  • some good videos but I was hoping for a look at the mounts and where they're attached
  • I have a 1 meter CF tube I clamp on my spinnaker pole. You can do the same, even longer tubes from plumbing supplies, combined with bicycle mounts. The plumbing tubes can be bent with a heat gun too.

  • Here's how I do it. Between the bridles, no pole. For 2020 I plan to play around with other mounting locations including the head cam. My cams don't have the phone control feature (too old) so that you can see remotely what the camera's seeing which would make it fairly easy to aim the head cam. Any one have practice and or a technique for aiming the head cam passively (I'm talking about pre-aiming the bracket angle etc. prior to shooting so the camera is "seeing" what you're looking at).

That’s my version of cheap gymbal, inspired on Nacdaddy’s. Just a standard GoPro mount, I filed down the joints to allow free pivoting and used a smaller diameter bolt that I had in hand. My boat has a bow foil so
I just sticked a mount base underneath it. have another one above it, one at the top of the mast and one on a hull, just aft of the main beam. I’ve also tried with tube mounts at the tiller cross arm but it gets in the way of the tiller extension. if I had to choose only one it would be the head mount, second preference is the gymbal.

  • Always use a lanyard
  • I use a helmet when I sail lost a
few brain cells over the years on the boom
Would you mount the gopro on top of you helmet
or on the side. Which works best?

I think you will hit the camera into the boom a lot if you put it on the top
  • I use Contour Roam for a side helmet mount. Waterproof without a case so get good personal audio. Put tape over the microphone hole and that will eliminate wind noise without ruining the quality.

  • Joseph Bennett, JoyriderTV, mounts one on the bill of a ball cap. It keeps the camera lower than a top of the head type mount. BTW, if you haven’t seen his YouTube channel it’s definitely worth watching.

See, you've got the right idea here! A fixed mount on the boat is stupid, because you don't see the boat heel properly. Instead of the hull rising, the boat stays level and the water falls away, and our brains aren't any good at correcting for that. I tried a bunch of different fixed mount locations (the bow, the boom, even the tiller crossbar, which gave me some excellent footage of my main block!) and couldn't stand any of them. I also rejected the head mount, because we're always looking all over the place and the result is unwatchably chaotic.

So I've decided to stick with a gimbal, so the view is true to the horizon and when you fly a hull you actually see the boat come up! I cobbled up a homebrew with a little friction damping so it wouldn't swing around wild+free and mounted it just under the forestay/bridle connection. Worked okay, could have been better. So I shopped around for a single-axis stabilizer (roll only - we don't care about pitch and yaw), but found that the one(s?) that used to be on the market apparently no longer are, except for one that's too expensive for me.

But I left the ebay search in place and snagged one a few months back... which is now stuck at a post office in Montana because my buddy who lives just north of the border can't go down to pick up the mail (his, mine, and others') thanks to the COVID border closure...

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

  • On my H17, I of course have wings which makes mounting on the boat easy. I forget the geometry of the H16 tramp supports but you may be able to mount a pole alongside the trampoline (i.e. running vertical alongside the tramp mount). If the bar needs to be deflected, use a piece of PVC and bend it to conform to the necessary deflection using a heat gun (fill pvc with sand so the bend doesn't compress).

Note, the spin pole is a good option and I actually saw a good video where the camera extended off the back of the boom.

Please share the results and the gimbal you got. Whenever possible..
  • It's the Soocoo PS2 - same as buddy's using in that youtube clip, though it seems to appear under other brands, such as Ikan:

With any luck the border should be reopening in about three weeks. My major concern is whether it's waterproof enough. You can take a look at it here:

    https://www.gearbest.com/…cessories/pp_494809.html

But I tried to order one and they just kept canceling the order without any explanation, so I'm guessing they don't actually stock them (anymore) and just can't be bothered to update their site. Or something. Oh - they're now showing it as "discontinued", though it'd make more sense for them to just remove it.

  • Thanks! There is the "Weewok Sport X1" on Aliexpress, I guess a chinese imitation. I might click buy .. I live in Chile and have used Aliexpress during the pandemia, no issues so far.
  • Probably not a knockoff - my guess is that there's only one manufacturer of this thing, but it's sold under a bunch of different brands.

The search on there isn't working for me at all - can you post a link?
