Repairing G-cat 5.0  Bottom

  • Hi everyone!

My father and I are windsurfers, but are completely new to beach cats. After seeing a couple small hobie cats sailing around here in destin, fl my father and I decided we had to get in on the action.

Yesterday we purchased a 1983 G-cat 5.0, but unfortunately broke a few parts towing her home. (mast ripped off the foot/pictures below)

For the bottom of the mast, we thought of riveting a strip of aluminum around it.

Is this the best way of going about repairing it?

Also, could anyone please recommend to us how to possibly find another mast foot w/ rotator and boom end cap for this cat. (attaches to gooseneck) (pictures below)

Really looking forward to getting her moving on the water again!

Please, any insight would be extremely valuable to us as we are new to all of this.

    Thank you all,
    Nick

  • Baraca, please have a look at my album on how I repaired my mast base on a GCat 5.0....http://www.thebeachcats.c…ictures/?g2_itemId=88636...and do yourself a favor and remove that mast rotator spar just as I did.

But I think you are going to have to take a more aggressive approach with that damage and remove 2-3 inches off the mast foot to get to virgin aluminum, which means you will have to move the gooseneck location up 2-3 inches and reinstall that. But you will have to see just how much space you have above the mainsail headboard to see if you have 2-3 inches to play with. The mainsail goes all the way up to the mast head casting if I remember correctly.

You cannot just rivet a strip of aluminum around the base, reinsert mast base, use a wood mallet to mold mast foot back into shape around mast base, seal with silicone, drill new holes and rivet into place, fill major holes with JB Waterweld, mast must be watertight. There are not many spare parts for the GCat out there, what caused that damage?
