Spring in the Netherlands  Bottom

  • Hi,

Meteo overhere states we are about to break a 100-year record low.
Before the 1st of April, I have to take the P18-2 away from the cat-beach
    where I'm now.
So went to my cat-club today to check the situation, cause my plan is
to sail her back and have a friend bring the trailer and storage-box.
    Here's what I found, my neighbours 18sqm

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-7H4PNZRM.jpg

The other cats aren't to happy either,

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-7XDJLYWN.jpg

Normally temps should be around 10-15 degr C this time of year.
And the club is dead-downwind with the easterly winds.
Forcast for sunday is a 3Bf east,(beam-reach) and 3-6 degr C at day.
So, now I'm not sure I can reach the ramp in all that ice, gonna check
    that. Its very tempting....

    Keep you posted.

  • I just came back from Frankfurt today, it was bloody cold there too. All higher ground, right over to Shannon, Ireland was white.
You wouldn't have wanted to be out in the open chuck today. Past those two wind farms outside the harbour in Amsterdam the waves looked ferocious. When they look big from 36,000', it must be Hell on Earth down at sea level!

  • Edchris,

I'm not planning to sail the North Sea , at this time and in this weather,
the cat is at an inland sea, now closed by dykes.
my route is like this, its about 22 Nm.

Went to check out the ice today, there's still about a hundred meters
of ice blocking the ramp at the club.
Guess I have look on sundaymorning and than decide wheater I sail
    or trailer the cat.

  • We went over about a mile south of your club. That looks like great sailing water, you don't have to come about every 5 minutes.
The West shore looked like lots of beach, or is that ice blown on top of rock?
That's a good trip to start the year. The ice won't be off my lake for another couple of weeks, but realistically it will be May before I have the cojonnes to put my boat in the water. We Canadians are just not as hard core as you Texel racers icon_smile

  • Yes, it is a nice place to sail, with the right wind-direction I can go out
and not tack for 30-40 minutes. Perfect for trimming the sails.
The west-shore is mainly dykes and rocks, we had strong easterly winds
the past weeks and low temps, so what you saw was ice.
Can't wait to go out sailing again, winter lasts ridiculously long this year.
As for sailing in the cold, we just put on the right sailing-clothes.
Wish you happy sailing in may.

  • André,
How is your Tornado project coming?
Did you get the chance to do any work on it during the winter?

  • Hi Bob,

The Tornado is still in the boatshed, blocked by 50 motorboats .
Can't get to it till they move the cradles, 1th of April all the motorboats
should be in the water but the weather is not very helpful, parts of our
waters is still frozen. So most motorboat-owners wait for the better
    weather-window.
Did ask the yard last week, they told me as soon the cat is
reachable they would give me a call.
With the temps at the moment its not possible to work on the hulls
anyway, so patience is the word.
Cuben-fibre main is in my storage and I stumbled over a pentex jib,
    wich seems tempting.
Also bought a jib traveller to make the T selftacking, its complete with
    Harken hardware.
First things first, I have to get the P18-2 out of the largest catbeach by
sunday, that's a challenge because of the ice on the lake.
For now it looks like I have to trailer her back. if only I could sail.

Would be nice to have ice-breakers to put on the bows of your Two to sail like Roald Amundsen to your catbeach!?!

  • Bob,
Think the bows of a 18-2m are a bit to fragile for icebreaker use or attachments,
P16's on the contrary, remember this one ?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5umQeB07vE

Took the mast down today and trailered the P back to the club,
during the disassembly it was snowing !!
Here's a view standing on the dyke at the club.
    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-OR8M8NCQ.jpg

Gonna step the mast tomorrow and put the trailer in storage.
1st of April is always the big "mast-up" day at our club, meet and greet
after winter. Going to hold the board of the club responsible for all this
ice, and make them do something about it... icon_cool

I had not seen that video, thanks for sharing!
Are you one of those two frozen guys?
Looks like they slid on the ice all the way back to the dike.
What a story they can tell!

    Bob,

Its an old video, it was on the beachcats forum over 18 months or so.
No, that's not me on the video, tough I must admit that we do stupid stuff
like that sometimes. Like sailing a N 6.0 almost 40 feet up the beach in
7 Bf with the kite up, we stopped 2 yards from a couple enjoying the view,
    sorry no video.

Stepped the mast today, put all the lines where they belong, she's ready to go,
just have to wait till the ice is gone....

I puckered up just reading this!
Shaking my head thinking about stuff I have lived through.
    Still smiling!

  • Yes ! its official, the Tornado can be picked up, they moved
enough boats and have space getting it out of the boatshed.
The appointment is for next Wednesday.
Pics following when its at the club.
    Looking forward to it!

There's still some ice at the catclub....
