H18 Tramp Question  Bottom

  • I am purchasing a H18 and will need to get a new Tramp for it.
    I am a novice and will either be solo, or crew of 2 to 3. Typically will be summer sailing in lower Chesapeake out of VA Beach.
    My question is;
    One piece bias cut tramp or
    Or 3 piece standard Tramp?

    I was planning on going with Mesh thinking that vinyl would get too hot and slick when wet.

    Thanks for any suggestions and input.

  • Should have also added that the H18 also has wings with mesh covers right now, in case that makes a difference.

  • Mesh is my preference, and bias cut at that. The bias cut means you only have to tighten it along one edge, instaed of two or three. The only time I liked a solid vinyl tramp was ocean racing in big chop- the tramp was a sheild against the water coming in from below. A bias mesh tramp is pricey, and if $$$ is an issue, give tenara thread a priority over other features. The regular thread rots in a couple of years, but Tenara thread is a Teflon derivitive and can last a decade.
