G-Cat 5.0 lines  Bottom

  • Just bought an 82 G-Cat 5.0.
    I have standing rigging coming.
The running rig is missing. I have the hardware, but the length, size, and type of
    line is what I need.
    Jig pigtails,
    Barber line
    Jib sheet
    Main down haul
    Out haul
    Main sheet
Halyards / (Wire is on order) length and type of line
    Portuguese turnbuckle
    These come to mind,
What came in the box with the boat???
Its in the shop now getting fiberglass work, I have the PDF manuals. so If I have all the
parts I can get it put together,

Hopefully by the end of July we will be on Lake Carlisle, Illinois
    thanks for the help

  • Dabblin, I rescued a GCat 5.0 from St Louis, restored it and sailed it for a while, sold it while down on vacation in Daytona Beach, even managed a regatta while down there. Not the fastest of boats, but for more speed removed the front tramp which can act like a sea anchor when it catches wave chop, I cannot remember line specs but you can contact Murrays and see what they have. Right now I have a Nacra 5.2 project boat which I have not been able to even look at as I have a lawn care business and with all this rain am continually playing "catchup". Sailing out of Columbia, MO, and Lake Carlyle is on my "must visit" list, PM me if I can be of assistance.

PS applied for the position of Harbor Master for CLSA, made the short list but did not get the job
  • The pigtail tang is situated about 1.5' - 2' back from the front beam on the inside lip of the hulls

    http://www.thebeachcats.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=87384&g2_serialNumber=6

The pigtail tang consists of 3 parts, the tang, the bolt and the anchor bar

    http://www.thebeachcats.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=87372&g2_serialNumber=6

attach pigtail to tang, insert bolt through bolthole on deck lip, attach anchor bar, tighten.

jib blocks attach to thimble of each pigtail using 1/4" shackle

connect the 2 pigtails together using the barber-haul

    the barber-haul consists of :-
2 lengths of low stretch 1/4" line approx 2'-3' long, attach 1 length to each pigtail using a bowline knot,
attach micro block to end of 1 length and attach "V" jamb block to end of other length.

take 1 length low stretch 1/4" line approx 6'-8' long and attach to "V" jamb block using bowline knot, feed line through micro block back through "V" jamb block, secure line by wedging into smaller end of "V"

    http://www.thebeachcats.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=87390&g2_serialNumber=6

If you do not have micro block or "V" jamb block, then forgo barber-haul, connect the 2 pigtails with a length of 1/4" low stretch line and use a truckers hitch to crank on the tension between the 2 pigtails, I never did use the barber-haul anyway.

  • So the "Pigtail" Connects to a Tang bolted to the inside edge of each hull, and to a short medial line, which
in turn connects to the Barber system. This allows the Jib block to move laterally outboard for better downwind sail trim/speed.
The length of the Pigtail determines the most inner point of jib sheeting under tension.
What is the length of the Pigtail? Thimble to thimble. From your pic's ( those are great, thanks)
it looks to be about 2 feet.
Am I over thinking this? It would seem that it would be a critical bit of
trimming for the overall boat rig. As the Jib angle set to the Hull angle would be set for the optimal
Point of sailing into the wind, giving the best VMG. So "I" being new to the boat would sheet in the jib, then adjust the angle of attack into the wind for the best airflow over the jib and Viola you are at the optimal upwind angle. Trim the main and you are off and reaching at the best Hans could figure for the boat, out of the box.
So how long are those Pigtails?
Thanks Again, great pictures, and good information.

  • My old GCat 5.0 now resides in Daytona Beach, FL. I have contacted the buyer and asked him to measure the pigtails for me, as soon as I have that info I will post it here.

    R
  • Jib block pigtails measure 7.5" pull to pull, I'm sure that 1/2" play would be acceptable with placement of jib blocks, so u could go to 8" if you wanted. When placing the order for pigtails, remember to use the term"pull to pull".
