TheBeachcats.com: Bradenton and Anna Maria, FL, launching locations

Added by gcat18 on Jul 25, 2002 - 03:25 AM

There are a few places to launch a catmaran aside from the local boat ramps. Here are the one's I've used fairly often...

Mantee Avenue Causeway:

On the West end, Southern side. I used to keep my boat on the beach here and the jet-ski rental guys would keep an eye on it. The restaurant there put up two volleyball nets recently. It launches into a very protected bay that exits to the ICW by a fairly narrow channel. The ICW runs North-South and has draw-bridges in either direction. The North bridge is Manatee Ave. and the South bridge is Cortez Ave.

Manatee Ave Bridge near Leverocks Restaurant:

On the East end, Northern side. Launches into the ICW, but North of the Manatee Ave. draw-bridge. There are no bridges blocking acess to Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. During low tide, the mud-flat may extend 50 yards to the channel. 4x4s may back the trailer right up to the channel but the cautious sailor will cat-track. There are powerlines between the road and the shore, so watch yourself when raising and lowering the mast!

Coquina Beach Boat Ramp:

Southern end of Anna Maria Island, East side. There is enough sandy beach south of the boat ramp to launch into the ICW. There are draw-bridges to the North and West. The North bridge is Cortez Ave. and West bridge is Gulf-to-Bay Ave. (I think). The West bridge exits into the Gulf of Mexico and has very strong tidal currents!

Sandbar Restaurant:

This isn't actually a place to launch the boat, but a place to keep it on the Gulf-side beach. It isn't actually at the Sandbar restaurant, but two blocks north of it. There is a sand dune with approximately 6 catamarans in front of it. The beach was recently "renourished" by pumping in 150' more sand! No vehicle access, but you can back you car to the end of the beach access road for unloading/loading purposes and find parking within two blocks.

The Sandbar Restaurant has good food, too!
