Hi:
Just picked up a 03 H16.
Question 1: Which Bob do I buy? I am getting conflicting information on Baby Bob vs bigger bob. I have a comtip mast (read that you need a bigger bob if you have a comtip????).
Question 2: Sailing solo 80% of time and weigh 185#. Am I better off getting a righting bag or a righting pole or both. I want the quicky right as my lake is glacier fed.
No intention of racing so I don't care if the pole is going to add blah blah weight. If that was my concern I would drink less beer.

I have / use and like my bag... it is easy to use.. you can easly right a h16 with it.. and transfer it when you buy a new boat. Storing it is the only problem but you can get a pocket sown into your trampaline (under). I am sure removing a tramp and getting a pocket installed is easier than rigging that pole would be! -

I have a righting bag for my Nacra 5.5 uni (18') and never use it. It is wrapped in it's out righting line and stored in the tramp laces at the back of the boat. It seems to work as a preventer some of the time, and has been nice enough to deploy as a sea anchor when I pitch poled.
I also weigh around 180 lbs and have never had a problem righting the boat with a simple righting line.
The trick seems to be to get the bow of the boat 45 degrees off the wind so that it is blowing between the mast and the bow. This puts some pressure on the tramp and catches the sail once it is out of the water. Make sure that the main and jib(if you have one) sheets are not cleated, or the boat will be harder to pull up and will not got head to wind as it comes up.
Also, don't let the dolphin striker hit you in the head. It hurts quite a bit.

Well I tried righting an older (83) H16 which had some water in the hulls and I couldn't even budge it. The bag option is probably cheaper and easier and lower tech. I don't want to drill the boat and not quite sure if you can get around that on the pole systems.
Do I need a 4:1 haul on the bag?
Also any thoughts on which Bob to buy for a comtip masted H16????

get the big bag from murrey's or even better if you support rick white's site catsalor.com, as he has done lots for the sport and has a great forum. the system comes with bag, line, and 4:1 blocks... the kit is cheaper than making it yourself. what i did was put a righting line around my mast base... put in a truckers hitch (similar to a slip knot) and attach the bag to the truckers hitch at the right height.
I don't know anything about bob's.... i simply seal any holes in my mast with marine silicone and make sure to right my boat before it can turtle.
I have been sailing for 30 years, sailed cats for 10 years now and only capsized 4 times... Once i let a girlfriend steer.... 2 times (within 5 minutes of eachother) i was drunk, last time i was jybing in 30mph wind and the line had a kink in it.. that stopped my travler from going where it needed to, and over i went.
I dont drink anymore, and i dont let gf's steer anymore (lol, well depends on how cute she is) and i learned how to gybe better!
