  • Sounds like a blast. I only have run the round the island format. I should be there.

  • I have questions!
    1. If the route is all in the channel between Padre Islands and the mainland, the northern part is a narrow looking canal. Looks to be about 400 feet wide. The dominant wind direction is favorable through there?
    2. Where do you stop in the middle overnight? Port Mansfield?
    3. Is this tent camping and does a shore crew meet you there, or do you have to carry the camping equipment on board the cat?

  • I'll ask, but I ASSume that it's:
    1) Yes, favorable winds (very reliable that time of year - but who knows for sure?)
    2) Stop in the middle is primitive camping; I'm not 100% sure where yet
    3) Yes, it's tent camping and yes there should be a chase boat to meet us there with nighttime provisions (i.e. food) - not sure if it's BYOB, but assume so at this point. In the past, teams brought their own equipment, as I understand it.

I'll ask one of the coordinators for some more details.

I also understand that this thing is an absolute hoot!

  • Ok, more details as much as can be had since this is early on in planning:
    1) Yeah, checking wind history, it's pretty reliably favorable and typically a reach of some sort. The very last leg to the proposed finish site should either be a broad reach to a run. Depending on weather, of course.
2&3) Mid-way will be primitive camping and one of three possibilities-a) We don't find a suitable support boat and we're on our own. This is HIGHLY unlikely, b) the support boat(s) can only accommodate food and drink for the evening, or c) We get a significant support boat and all camping gear and food can be delivered. Have no ideas about the odds of c), but option b) is very high up there since there are a lot of guys around with Bay boats. Still don't have the mid-way spot finalized as a lot seems to go into proper selection, but will be beach facing intercoastal, do at least ease, protection and to blow mosquitos away with the typical off-shore evening breeze.

And as indicated the organizers are trying to mimic the early years of this event. There's a ton more regarding trying to acquire parking at the finish, hotel for ground crew etc.

If I were to guess, expect more details February to March and finalizing April -May, but you know how these things go. Details are always fluid up to the last minute, but they're just finalizing details.
