Prindle 16 sails again, first time in how long?  Bottom

  • Wanted to thank those that have contributed to this forum. The information and thoughts helped me to get my recently acquired Prindle 16 out on the water again.

We bought the boat and it had been sitting for many years. The person we bought it from had never sailed it. They had bought it hoping to fix it up but never did. No idea how long it had been sitting but after some minor refurbishment we took it out. Especially happy for those suggesting to do quick fixes and get out sailing before the summer is over. Otherwise we might still be mired in the fixing it stage.

Had planned to post a picture but don't see the ability to upload to the forum. Oh well you know what P16s look like.

  • Solid cat and a lot of them are sitting neglected in yards and storage. Glad you made this one sail again.

It's great to hear that someone followed this sage advice. I've seen people who spent countless hours prettying boats up, painting them even, just to have a hull break in half the first time it's loaded up.

The P16 is a great boat, and yours is classic!

That would be a bad deal to fix it up and have it break!

We fixed the mechanics of things and were looking into fixing the soft spots on the deck and one on the hull. In the end we did a quick fix with Gorilla glue on the worst spot and decided to just sail it (being gentle) to get some use out of it this year. We can always work on the hulls over the winter.

Yup early hulls. So much paint on the serial number on the hull I can't make out all the digits to see how old (It's been painted a few times).

The previous owner did say they bought a better sail. After we got it home we found the original sail (in bad condition) in a tube on the trailer. The headsail is pretty much a floppy rag that we patched with sail tape. It needs replaced but works for now.

There are used jibs in good shape here on thebeachcats. Try pbegle - he used to be a Prindle dealer and has handled used parts for quite a while. He retired a bit ago but may still have or know of a P16 jib.
