bent bolt on Nacra 5.8  Bottom

  • Does anyone know what size the bolts are that go thru the straps on the crossbars and into the hulls on a Nacra 5.8?
I have one on the rear of boat that has somehow backed its way out and is now bent and halfway sheared off. I fugured it might be a good time to replace it, especially since we are taking it to the beach in two weeks.

Also anyone have any good places to launch from a trailer and daysail in the fort morgan, gulf shores orange beach area of alabama.

Im thinking of the bay off of fort morgan rd and perdido bay area?
  • There is a boat ramp down there but it's very shallow in that part of the bay.

  • in other words, nota good idea with a boat with boards?
  • I believe all the strap bolts are the same on the older Nacras, except for the 4.5, that used long bolts. The ones on my 5.7 are SS hex head 5/16" x 1 1/2"
The internal beam bolt is the same bolt, only 2" long. Any decent hardware store or West Marine should have them. I can't remember if they ar NC or NF thread. Take the other one out of that strap & bring it with you, should be less than a buck. Remember to put some grease on the threads, especially if you are in salt water.

  • thanks for the advice
  • and don't over torque them the receiving strap is brass and in some positions requires major surgery to replace

there is a torque in the assembly guide, go to that carefully, not beyond and keep an eye that the hulls don't start toeing out alomg the beams mid-season.....back off bolts, push hulls back in and retorque slightly higher if they do
  • 18 ft lbs is the Nacra number, but I think that was also to prevent crushing the track the tramp slides in. Remember that the straps may not go all the way flush to the hull, once it feels like 18 lbs stop! (a wrench that size is probably only 6-8", so if you pull 36 lbs, you have 18 ft lbs.)
Also remember to grip the little square chips with pliers & hold them square to the strap as you tighten the bolts.
