  • Thanks for the nice vieo and looks like a great lake to sail on. After sailing today I pulled my H18 out to store in the barn for the winter. Was high 60s today but calling for 50s all of next week here at the IN /MI line where I sail.. Jay

I truly do like the 5.0. The hull design (for boardless) and balance are superb. Some days I think it needs a bit more jib, but....

The gimble/mount is the same as I showed some time back except without the spring. It's just a free swinging pivot.

Don't bother, you will just mess up the trim, & gain almost nothing.
The 5.0 is slightly undercanvassed, but that lets it shine when the wind gets up.
If you need a bigger thrill, buy its big sister, the 5.7.
The other thing I would do- add a single trap, & go out in higher winds. That will up the pulse rate. Trapped out with a hull rising will give you the rush you're looking for.

Not planning to fiddle with the sail plan in any way. +1 tamer in higher winds as is.

Our 5.2 was like this too. Kinda heavy and moved like a pig in low winds/downwind, but a blast in 15-25's, which we get all the time.

Above that it becomes a sub. icon_cool

  • Just starting the season at Lago Rapel in Chile,
Thanks NacDaddy for the inspiration on the gimble, I'm just using the standard gopro mount loose, with a lanyard of course. Next time I'll complete the project.

I'm very jealous, but on the other hand I sort of like a few months off for the holidays and to rethink/rebuild my boat. I always try to make it just a bit better/faster each season.

And thank you for the inspiration as your videos are great. I think your footage is crisper than mine. My camera is the Garmin VIRB basic (the very first model they offered) which I purchased refurbished for $69. It specs. out at 1080 30fps max. resolution, but I have had better results at 720 60fps.. What model GOPRO do you have? Now that I have entered the additive realm of sailing videos I may have to bump my game up a notch on my action cam for next season too!!! What the hell, It's just money!@#$!@#!@#

An idea: close your jib angle a bit in order to point higher, you can add a line from side to side, with two or three attachment points for the blocks, starting at the hiking strap and out. If you add fast shackles you can move the blocks easily, it also saves set-up time. Line has to be unstretchable

Good deal! Mine is a Hero 3+, if I remember well it is set up at 1080 60fps. It could be higher (4k) but that eats a lot of hard drive and needs a better machine than mine for editing. Then I edit at 720 60fps (I think..), which seems a good compromise for me so far, it fits under vimeo's weekly limit of 500mb and doesn't eat so much hd. 720 is good quality for video but not so good if you want to make a picture out of a video, that's why I record at a bit higher resolution.

Your video quality looks pretty decent to me, if you get a new one I would perhaps leave the old one there and add more angles. Or save for a drone...

Variety is key I think. Adding some more context besides the sailing is nice too, I used to do that more, I was just checking some old videos:
    - 2011, on my old 5.0. Footage and edition by my cousing, a pro in such matters:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYqxKUWXZtY

    - 2012., with an iphone3 in a bulky case. And the rest with a real machine, that was before the smarthpones era..

Thanks for the idea. I think I know what you're suggesting, but a drawing or pic would be great. My jib lead is attached at a single point (no track some boats had them, mine doesn't). I don't have the fancy four way adjustable setup that came on some boats and have never actually seen it such that I could take a shot at duplicating it. I do plan to add a track this winter so I can adjust the lead angle fore and aft.

I think you idea is for a barber hauler of sorts?

Use this link to the photos in the Prindle 18-2 manual that shows you how to assemble the 4 way system:

if you plan to stick with your current sails (and in the future) the ability to move in and out vs fore and aft would probably provide more utility in the end

    IMHO
typically your going to get more bang for your buck by inhaul / outhaul adjustment during upwind / downwind course changes than you would realized with the fore aft adjustments. draw back is you get more lines on your deck

My N5.5 has a track but I never adjust it. The sail is not the original one and the sweet point for most conditions is further forward from the max adjustment. So I set up the jib higher on the forestay, which has a similar effect. And I forgot about it long ago. Another solution is an adjustable clew plate on the jib, that gives some adjustment. But for your boat it's far more important to move the attachment point towards the footstraps, on the hull it's too far out.

Before adding a 4 way system try just a line from side to side, tied at the eyestraps you show on the picture, each side with two or three knots with a loop to attach the blocks. Maybe one at the foot strap, one midway towards the hull and a third one in between, or something like that.

I made myself an adjustable system, picture is my laptop at the office, will add it tomorrow, i used two laser blocks like this each side. But, given that I changed the eyestrap for a plate like the one on klozhald's link above, attaching that block was easier. Tying that block to the eyestrap wouldn't be as clean I think.

It takes a lot of line, four side to side lengths (about 8m). If I had to redo it i would just add a line side to side, i did so on my old N5,0 and it worked just fine. I personally would never go to the 4-way system, too much of a hassle, I actually had a cleat on the hull for that and I removed it, not friendly with the nuts.. icon_eek

Barber hauler is different, you can add one too, I don't see the need for it for recreational sailing either. The simplicity of the N5.0 is part of its advantages, don't underestimate the value of that.

Well, perhaps too many personal preferences.. just take what makes sense to you. I must say that making all this mods was really fun..
