Multi-Hull Sailing in Missouri  Bottom

  • Have lived and sailed Missouri over the past 16 years and it gets a bit stale sailing solo, miss the camaraderie and the competitive spirit of having fellow cat sailors around. How about a get-together for all local sailors?
  • What are the most beachcat friendly waters in Missouri?

  • We sail beachcats out of Alton Lake Sailing Association on the Alton Pool of the Mississippi River, just north of St. Louis. We are mostly beachcats, we have 6 H18s, along with H16, H21, P19, Hobie Wave, Trac 16. The river is a mile wide where we are and calm, since we are upstream of Lock and Dam 26. There are islands and sand bars to stop at along the way. Last October a few of us were sailing up to Grafton Il where the Illinois and Mississippi rivers join (it gets a little narrower up there), and a drone operator out of Grafton got a couple of us on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo3439kDVMg .

The website for Alton Lake Sailing Association just recently came down due to some hosting issues, not sure when we will get it back up, it's on the to do list before good sailing starts up in the spring!

Damon, since you asked about all of Missouri, we usually make a trip to Table Rock Lake once a year for some sailing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaYFpBReBvQ. Great water, but the rocky shore is not as beachcat friendly as the mast up storage we enjoy at home.

Carlyle Lake and CSA are about 1 1/2 hours east of us, but that's Illinois, and this thread is Missouri.
  • Thanks I've been to Carlyle many times back in the Hobie Fleet days but wasn't sure what was available in Missouri.

Watched the video, the Mississippi River is a lot different up there than at Memphis!

  • Beachcat friendly icon_lol almost sounds like an oxymoron.

Mark Twain Lake is a regular stop on my sailing schedule, mostly concrete ramps but it does have a sandy beach area for swimming, have used my beach wheels to launch from there during a weekday when no one was around. Of course the local militia (Parks & Rec Patrol) had to turn up and make sure I was not breaking any laws.

Stockton Lake is more sailing friendly, lots of mono-hulls, but you have to have your wits about you, prevailing SW wind wants to put you on the rock-lined dam wall to the north, talk about being driven on a lee shore icon_eek

Always wanted to try sail the Missouri River but I would need a motor mounted as that river flows fast and powerful.

Tried out for the job of Harbor Master at Lake Carlyle Sailing Association, made the short list but did not get the job icon_frown

Have pretty much sailed every pond, pool, eddy, swamp and creek I can get my cat in (legally) except for Pomme De Terre Lake, for some strange reason I keep skipping that one.

I think I need to meet up with Warhovs and give Alton Lake a try, everything around here is 1.5 - 3 hrs drive anyway icon_biggrin
  • warhovs, PM sent...
  • Hey Guys, I've talked with all of you before. Our Cat event "Muddy Waters" is taking place in a few weeks on Sept. 22-24 at Carlyle (CSA) I'd love to see some of you all come out some friendly competition and BEER :)

  • Charlie,
I was hoping to attend this year, but some work plans came up that will prevent me from making it. Was hoping to get a couple of H18s there. Hopefully next year!
  • Well, darn, thank you for making the effort. You guys looked like pro's out there. 2 years also when I saw you.
We are in the "talking phase" of having next years on Memorial Day weekend but this could change. So Keep us in mind, I know I will :) We have a few great H18 racers out here that would love the competition.

  • While a bit further away, if you're interested in other events in the region please consider joining the Catamaran Racing Associations of Michigan and Wisconsin in New Buffalo, MI for Cat Fight VII June 2nd and 3rd. I have sent invites and we hope to also see faces from Alton Lake Sailing Association, Carlyle Sailing Association, Hobie Fleet 444 in Minnesota, Lake Monroe Sailing Association in Illinois, Alum Creek Sailing Association in Ohio, and Austin Lake Catamaran Association in Michigan. This year we're anticipating at least 30 boats but probably more.

  • There is also a strong Hobie Fleet sailing out at Clinton Lake, Lawrence, KS. Have u sent them an invite?

  • I actually did earlier today
  • Hi Guys/Gals, short notice reminder but Carlyle Lake Annual Muddy waters in on Memorial Day this year. Inexpensive one meal included and of course Catamaran racing. Hope to see some of you there.
