Knife Recommendations  Bottom

  • What knives do you carry when sailing? How do you store it?
I bring a Kershaw Chill flipper clipped to my bathing suit. It needs to be rinsed off after exposure to salt water. I really love the knife and don't want to loose it but preparedness trumps. What about the hook rope cutters, are they enough?
I have seen some with marlinspikes. Not sure it is needed on a recreational boat. Perhaps this is topic creep but vest selection for gear storage may be a consideration too. But as I can't be on the water now, might as well talk about how to best prep for the season.

  • i wear a pdf with zippered pockets. on my jacket i tie a whistle
    in my pockets i keep:
a sharp knife (since i lose them and they rust i go with relatively inexpensive ones)
    some line, a carabiner, and
    a multi-toolhttp://www.murrays.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/21-1320_298x144.jpg

In my hull i have a small tool kit with
whipping line and a large needle
    a few open end wrenches
    flat and philips
a few assorted pins, ringdings, drainplugs and 2 part pool epoxy incase i rupture a hull
assorted pieces of line incase i need to lash something or tow another cat
  • I have this Benchmade 7 hook knife attached to the outside of my pfd.

It's less versatile than other knives, but it comes with a secure sheath that can be opened with one hand, and the knife is easy to grasp securely. It's a knife I can actually envision using rapidly under water in a real emergency, no sharp point, the ability to find and deploy it by feel alone.

  • I usually carry a Leatherman Wave multi-tool which has two knifes, pliers, screw drivers, bottle opener, and other assorted tools. I tuck it in the tramp pocket or in a zipper pouch clipped to the tramp.

  • I wear the titanium squeeze knife on my pfd for emergencies. On handed quick draw, light and secure.

The folder with the marlinspike is perfect for everything else. It has a shackle key and the marlinspike is super handy for untying tough knots, quickly opening and closing shackles with eyes, helping align holes and about a million other little things. The quality of a myerchin blade can't be beat, you can shave with it. I prefer non serrated because serrations destroy rope and dont cut clean. the crew size is just right. The captain is a huge filing knife.

  • Does the Merchant need to be open access the shackle kleyman tool?

I like the squeeze aqua lung concept.

I wonder how well the seat belt type cutters work on line? Anyone try it?

    Thanks.

  • No you can access it closed. It doubles as the handle to open the folder one handed. Another option is thier sailors tool which has a pair of pliers integrated. I find that the pliers aren't as handy as you may think and the folding knife easier to use. I also don't like the 2/3 length serrated blade as well as non-serrated. http://shop.myerchin.com/P300BL-Sailors-Tool-Blue-Handle-P300BL.htm

Its really nice and secure. Perfect for emergencies and very quick to draw.

I've seen some people with them but I've never tried them on line. I would be worried about them not being useful if trapped under a sail or tramp.

  • I carry this on a lanyard round my neck.
Its tucked away under my pfd.
In our region we always wear neoprene,
So the knife doesn't touch my skin.

    https://www.kokwatersport.nl/product-img/l33039-wichard-mes-met-sluitingsleutel-soft-grip.jpg

    Its stainless steel.
    It cuts trough kevlar/dyneema
    Has a shackle opener/tightener.
Major plus is the bottle opener. icon_wink

There's a similar version that floats from
the same brand, but thats to bulky in
    my opinion.

In a small waterproof bag, I carry a pair
of pliers and a variety of spares. That bag
sits in a zippered-pouch on the tramp.

    Regards, André
