Nacra 5.2 hull damage  Bottom

  • My nightmare repair has begun. The damage to the hull on my newly acquired Nacra 5.2 has progressed from a small crack to a very major repair.

As you can see from the photos this boat has been repaired by the PO. Any suggestions on materials to order for the repair. The boat has been painted and will need to be stripped and either repainted or gel coated. I have never done gelcoat but hear it is not to difficult.

  • Oh man that looks bad. Looks like the bottom and side were completely ripped out. Maybe grind all the cracks and 3-4 layers of fabric on the inside first then when that is stabilized similar on the outside. I'm not sure it's worth it. Definitely get a Grinder a random orbit palm sanded west system epoxy and long set time hardiner with the pumps and a pile of disposable brushes mixers and cups and a bag o gloves. If you have the right tools and supplies it will go a lot easier

  • If the hulls are symetrical I would use the other hull to make a mold. Then I would cut off all the broken fiberglass from that hull. I would then attach the mold to the outside of the ripped hull with tape or straps and start building the fiberglass thickness from the inside. Once the epoxy has set I would add an external layer to make a better joint.

There's a lot of important steps I have omitted but it's enough for you to make a decision. If you want to do it, let us know and I will write a more complete instruction set. Others will surely chime in with their own ideas, even simpler and better

Easy to write in two sentences, WAY more work in actual practice.

The hulls are a mirror image, everything needs to be reversed. If you just copy one hull, you end up with two lefties, or two righties.
5.2's are not rare. You have no family history or sentiment in this boat, spend your time sailing your 5.0.
In the meantime keep beating the bushes. I would bet good beer that you can scare up a set of good hulls, for less money than you will spend on materials/tools, not to mention time. Remove any useful parts & send the broken one to the dump.
Once you get hold of solid hulls, assemble a good boat.

Great Idea, I don't have any attachment to this boat other than its one I have never sailed and I lost a day on the 5.0 working on it today. It was a good learning experience taking the deck off.

Anyone have hulls for a 5.2 laying around????

  • I think quite a few people probably have hulls lying about. Getting one to you is another story. I would think you could probably find another bargain boat on craigslist for a few hundred.
