Just bought a boat and planning a trip...any advice?  Bottom

  • Hello,

We just bought a Fontaine Pajot Levezzi 40! Yay! We are planning a trip from Chesapeake Bay to Myrtle Beach next month. We are fairly new to the sailing world. Does anyone have any advice for the trip. We were planning to take the ICW for safety. We've been warned about Cape Hattaras which sounds pretty scary.

    Thanks!
  • Wow! You couldn't find a beachcat?
This is not gonna fit on a pair of cat trax...
    Looks like fun, though!

    New to sailing?
Cape Hatteras has a few other names, like
    Graveyard of the Atlantic.

  • Why don't you pick some windy days and sail in the Chesapeake to get your feet wet so to speak to learn the boat prior to an extended trip? Unless you've had prior ocean sailing experience I'd take someone who has experience as summer storms can come up pretty quick. I've heard motorboats end up 150 miles down wind from Oregon and Hatteras Inlets due to wave action and wind not being able to get back to those inlets. So that area is not for the faint of heart. Personally I couldn't think of anything more boring than doing the ICW to Myrtle Beach as you will be a motor boat most of the way. Unless you need to get the boat there, or want ocean experience via hiring captain, I'd put the boat on a trailer and drive/fly to Myrtle.

  • That sounds great! May I join you? Sail Magazine ran a lot of articles about the ICW. They run a rally with a lot of participants. A nice new waterway guide is worth the price. When you clear the south end of the North River into the Albermarle Sound, anchor off Kitty Hawk and stay at The Cypress Moon Inn on the sound. With a shallow draft you might be able to skip the Alligator River and head south to the Pamlico Sound via Croatan Sound. With your draft, I can't recommend the Core Sound. It's shallow there so consult your charts. DO NOT go outside around Cape Hatteras!!! The Diamond Shoals are known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic for a very good reason.

Good luck, keep us posted. GH
ps to Goodsailing, a 40'x 22' catamaran does not trailer lightly.
