Be Careful Out There, Two Rescues!  Bottom

  • I ran across two unrelated reports of catamarans having to be rescued, one in North Carolina and the other in Michigan.

Details are scarce but it appears in both cases the sailors were reasonably suited up and in one case had emergency locators and the other had a "float plan" that consisted of the wife watching from shore. So both were rescued successfully but it appears both boats were lost or heavily damaged. One was listed as "sinking" and the other was heavily damaged while attempting to tow it to shore bad conditions.

Quote from the local Coast Guard officer."Their use of properly-registered emergency devices greatly contributed to the speed of their rescue,” said Capt. Chris Scraba, chief of response for the Coast Guard 5th District in a press release. “The information received from the beacons allowed the Coast Guard to issue an urgent marine information broadcast with their exact location, which helped a good Samaritan locate them. Without these devices this case could easily have turned tragic and could have resulted in a long, multi-day search.”

from the articleDeputies were called to the scene at Port Sanilac Harbor about 2:50 p.m. Saturday, according to a statement from the Sanilac County Sheriff Department.

A woman on shore said her husband’s catamaran sailboat had capsized on the lake.

Deputies responded to the scene with a patrol boat and found the sailboat had drifted about two miles off shore and three miles north of Port Sanilac.

Terrence Connolly, 57, the operator and only person on the boat, was in the water. He was wearing a wet suit and personal flaotion device.

Glad that we have some non-fatal reminders this time of year to make sure someone knows when you are supposed to be back, to dress for current and possible conditions, and to have on board some way to let people know you are in trouble if the worst happens.

    Anyone know these guys?
