Mast Base...H18 Downhaul?  Bottom

  • Sailors,

Please see the image below. This is on my "new" H18. I am guessing this replaces the stock downhaul system on the H18. How do I thread this / connect to the tack of the main.

What's the purpose of the single block connected to the tie strap? Double blocks connected to single block?

    Thanks,

    Tim

That looks like the bottom of the "H18 Power Downhaul" (5 to 1)

So look around in your parts and see if you have the top piece. Then you just need some very low stretch line to complete the system.

Looked in my stuff and didn't find anything resembling the top part of the photo. However, I think I can fashion something similar and make my own power downhaul. Thanks! yes

  • I think you maybe able to do a little work to a shroud adjuster and make it work for your missing piece.

  • Maybe just a double block witth a becket that attaches to the bottom of the sail.

This reply got me to thinkin'...

Using the hardware in the original photo, I came up with this application/routing... see photo. Will this work? Is this a 3:1 purchase? I'm not sure you use that word here.. icon_confused

  • What you've shown (double block on the tack) would be a 4:1 purchase. This is OK on the 18 and was the max that was allowd by the class rules for many years. The class rules now allow up to 8:1 purchase and allow two exit blocks so the downhaul can be trimmed from the side of the boat while under way. For casual sailors it is probably overkill, but for more serious sailors and racers, it is definitely a noticable improvement.

  • My $.02 -

comptip plus original mainsail - 3 or 4:1 downhaul is sufficient
comptip plus new squaretop - 6:1

all alu mast + original main - 6:1
all alu mast + pentex squaretop - 6:1, prefer 8:1
