SC 17 Rudder Attachment Pins  Bottom

  • I recently purchased an SC17. The pins that attach the rudder to the aluminum bracket on the stern are tubular with cotter pins at the top and bottom. I would like something that is a little easier to remove for trailering and storage. Is there another option that makes rudder removal easier? I would add a photo to this post but could not figure out how to do that. Any help on how to attach a photo would be helpful too. Thanks!
  • I have large avibank pins in mine... No photos as I am out of town, but just think large pins like this:

4 of them that large are going to get pretty expensive though

  • The latest pins Aquarius sells are really easy to remove. Call them and order some, nice to have backups if the gudgeon pins break. I can post a picture later.

  • Adding photos is explained in the FAQ's, here is the link.

Basically the photo must reside somewhere on the web. They can be on any website, or you can start an album, upload them to your album, then link them. Notice the 2 rows of buttons, (just above the emoticons) when you are typing a post? Use those, IMAGE will allow you to past the image so it shows in the post, URL allows you to paste a copied link so it will be live.

  • Here's a picture of the current offering of gudgeon pin and cotter pin. It looks funky but is quite easy to pull. Make sure you gudgeon pins aren't metal, they are supposed to be a sacrificial breaking point to save your transoms/rudders. Every old SC I've bought has had metal pins or ss bolts and nuts.

  • Mac,
I use the stainless pins in the transom and plastic small bolts for the pivot pins. The pivot pin is so small and much easier to break. To me the two large plastic pins on the transom may have enough strength to break the transom or at least damage it. The plastic bolt as the pin through the rudder to rotate on is pretty easy to break and the large avibanks make it a breeze to pull the rudders on and off. I'm in Korea now, when I get home I'll take a picture.

how long does it take to wear out a set of the "new" pins?

  • I don't know how long it takes as I usually sell the boat and move on to another project. I'm trying to fix that. Aquarius seemed pretty adamant about the whole system being plastic, gudgeon pins and roller pins, so I'm really just parroting what Tom told me.

  • Thanks to all for the advice. My SC17 has the plastic bolts through the rudder pivots and I agree with Ernie that these would shear off before the larger bolts in the transom mount. I like the idea of the Avibank pins.
    Thanks
