Hobie rudders??

A friend bought a Hobie and we are trying to figure out the rudders. Can someone explain their basic operation. Are we overthinking this? The boat I think is a early 90s. Is the black cam pictured in the 1st photo in the correct orientation?

or is this correct?

Upper rudder casting is early 80's or before and those are the original cams for the casting.

Remove rudders, remove delrin (plastic) screw underneath the cam from the underside (carefully, use large flat head screwdriver and try not strip the delrin screw head), inspect and remove cams, remove springs and plungers, clean housing with break cleaner, clean springs and plungers, use silicone grease sparingly inside of casing, lubricate delrin screw and replace, replace spring and plunger, replace cam (if cam is damaged, replace with new cam). Set cam tension using delrin screw.

To replace the cams you will need a very sharp titanium drill to remove the rivit which loves to spin when you drill. The replacement cams are $33 each with the sister screws. Sometimes easier to lubricate from above & use a loop of 3/8 rope to jerk cam to UP position when you leave the beach. Pete

When installing new cams, buy the Hobie tool that assists in getting the cam back to the proper condition. I think it cost about $7. You will have to drill a 3/16 hole in the flat portion of the cam. The instructions come with the tool. If you have the tool with you, it enables you to get the cam back in proper condition while on the water, if you need to do so.
