Tornado project  Bottom

  • Guys,

Bought a Wood-epoxy Tornado classic yesterday. Sorry, no pics yet, in the boat-shed there was almost no
daylight, to dark for photo's, inspected it with a headlamp.
The hulls seem to be fine, the sails are worn and it has nacra 6.0 rudders.
Mast is straight, so are the boom and beams.
Can't get it out of the shed till April, as it is blocked by 50 motorboats.
Took the beams, sails and trampoline home. Already did a deposit on a cuben-fibre fathead main.
Gonna take the tramp to the sailmaker for re-stitching, and have a nice rain-coat made out of the main.

its going to be a lot of work in april, but I'm very happy!!

    regards, André

    Thanks!

Don't know, Dave. Did the deposit on the internet, the sail-loft/shop is the main
supplier for the Dutch olympic team. Had some good deals with them in the
past. They asked 750 euro's for it, and said it is hardly used.
Photographs don't show a label of the sailmaker.
They're closed till the 8th of January, let you know when I pick up the mainsail.

  • Excellent! You're about to have fun!

    Dave
  • Picked up the mainsail today, unfortunately our living-room isn't
spacious enough to show the whole sail and it is poring rain outside.
Its brandnew, no signs of lubricant or aluminium scafes at the
    luff-cord(?)
It smells and crackles as a new main.
    Some pics:

NIEUW! stands for brandnew in dutch, so Dave, its an Ulmann main,
that more or less answered your question.
Don't think you can get a new main from there loft at this price, though.

Found a used Harken jib-traveller in there "used" department as-well,
its complete with a car and block, did a reservation on that,
because I'm running out of resources buying a Tornado and main
    in one month.
Can't wait till April, yippie !!

    Regards , André

  • Your April is going to be fun.
    What a great project!
Any idea about how much it weighs?
Can you build it on the beach from which you launch so as not to have to trailer it?
Can you trailer a 10 foot wide boat in Amsterdam?

Of course you can trailer it, just not flat.

Yes, its going to be fun to do the rebuild, love to work
on "old school" cats. Just a bit nervous for hidden faults.

EDIT No, don't know how much it weights, some say the early
polyester boats(60's & 70's) weighted more then the wooden
    T's.
Don't know till Aprill, first have to sand of at least 4
    layers of cheap (walmart ish)paint.

Like I mentioned before, in the winter we are at the largest catbeach in Europe,
in summertime we are at our catclub at Warder,
    http://www.wsv-warder.nl/index.php/menwsv
btw one of our members became 2th in the last F18 world-championship
    in the US.
    EDIT http://www.abyc.org/uploa…World_Championship3.html
There's a lot of expertise and knowledge at our little 50 cats club. A lot of
    tornado's too.
Both locations have mast-up storage, so we don't have to dis-assemble our cats.

When I pick up the tornado in April, I'm going to use the P 18-2 road-trailer,
since the T comes in parts.
Hulls upside down strapped to the trailer, mast in the support.
Maximum beam for a road-trailer is 2.50 mtr in Europe.

The P18-2 is for sale with trailer as soon the T-project is finished, hope to get
some money out of that deal to buy a tilt-trailer for the Tornado and take it
to France for the holiday this summer.

A nacra 18sqm is still on the wish-list.

    Keep you posted,
    Regards, André
