Recondition sail? Can this be done?  Bottom

  • I have a plastic/mylar sail it is starting to delaminate in in a couple of areas. Is their a company that I can send it to and have it relaminated? or reconditioned?

Should I just purchase a new sail, this one has about 7 years FL sailing on it?

    Thanks

  • Check with http://sailcare.com, if it can be done they can do it. They could not get the oil smudges out of mine, but the rest of the sail came out really well.

  • for a temporary fix, try this in the 'transparent' version. it looks a lot like woven mylar.

worked for me and i could hardly see it on the sail. again, it's probably only temporary if the sail is starting to delaminate.

i had Sailcare restore a dacron sail for me with good results but i don't know if they do mylar ones.

If it's only a small area you can try taping it down, but general delamination of the mylar from the sail body means it's time for a new one.

  • reward yourself with a new sail if you can afford it

new mylar (the outer layers of the sail) tech has improved a lot since your old sail was made and they typically don't scale off in slivers anymore... they just rip at the stitches or the fibers give out and tear. you can then be patched with new material.. but it is just delaying the inevitable... (need for a new sail)

If you want to have a sail for a decade or so... go with dacron. they will stretch and "blow out" (stretch and not be as efficient) but they will last for up to 20 years (see all the legacy boats with colored sails)

if you want a lighter / faster sail.. go with a modern cloth (pentex, kevlar, technora, load path, etc), and modern cut - technically these still use a mylar film on the outside for UV and abrasion protection.. but as i said.. the mylar of yesterday is no longer utilized

  • Thanks for all the answers, I will utilize the 3m tape for a temporary fix (if needed), and begin the adventure of a new sail. I actually deep down was wanting a black sail??? Just couldn't justify until the one I have wore out, I think I may be there. icon_razz

On a fun note I pitch poled my boat yesterday for the firs time, actually couldn't right it until a friend came over and helped icon_confused

  • my new main (from doyle in st pete) isn't black, but it's pretty dark...

  • The darker the sail the hotter it gets. Go with a lighter color for a longer lasting sail..

Is Dimension-Polyant the only sailcloth manufacturer with the new funky colors?

Do you know who made the blood-red (ish) pentex used on one (or more) of the wildcats?
