Jib Rigging  Bottom

  • I bought a used Trac 14 catamaran and have a question about rigging the jib. Can I just take the jib sheets from both sides and tie them to the jib clew? Is it better to have a small roller block for each of the jib lines to connect to the jib and then tie them off on the boat back near the mast? What is the best way to rig the jib for ease of sailing? Thanks.
  • as it's only a 14' it will probably only have a tiny jib so simply tying the sheets to the clew should be fine

but on a bigger boat with a bigger jib, like the 5m2 jib on the hobie16, the jib can get so loaded up with wind that it is almost impossible to pull in and cleat

so that's why you'll find a small block tied to each side of the jib clew

by going to the block on the jib and then back to the block on the boat you have geared down the system by a factor of 2 and halved the loads. much easier to pull in

get on a 30' boat and you need a winch to do the same thing
