Proper maintenance  Bottom

  • Just a little story to underline why taking a little time to do some proper maintenance can save you headaches later.

On Saturady, my club had its first race of the year. We have cats from the late 70's to 2009 and sailors of various levels of experience. The races are surprisingly competitive.
The wind was 25mph with gusts to 30mph. So, only 8 cats decided to race (usually we have 12+).
During the race 2 cats went over (one turtled). Usually not a big problem. The one cat managed to right and finish the race, the other was still turtled at the end of the race. A few of us dropped of our crew to assist, but the cat would not right.
After sailing back and I brought more people in my motor boat to help.
It was quite a sight. 6 people in/on the cat and two motor boats trying to right it.
Finally, it right and it limped back to shore.
Why was it so hard to right?
The mast was full and the hulls were half full of water.
