  • QuoteSo, it is almost certain a White T, did send them a e-mail for an other
end-cap and asked for some more background info.

I don't believe they will have any of those end caps, those T's were built in the late 70's, however you may well be able to find one from a parts/wrecked boat.
Unfortunately, Reg White is no longer with us. He passed away suddenly, while sailing IIRC , a couple of years ago.
They won their gold medal during the Olympics held in Canada, his crew,(John Osbourne) still lives here, & owns a local sail shop, very good people to deal with.
I stumbled across them while searching for knowledgeable Cat sailors, mentioned they were hard to find in this neck of the woods.
    His wife remarked;
"You should talk to my husband.
He won a gold medal... sailing Tornado's,
    at the Olympics."

  • Andre,

post your picture to the tornadocat yahoo group. Maybe someone there will have one. Geoff Dobbs who used to run sailcraft of Canada is active there and might be able to tell you if your boat is a reg white

  • This is what Sailspar replied to my mail:

" Good morning, what a lovely job you have made with your restoration! I have asked both David and Derrick about this as they have both been with Sailspar from the 1970s. David said that his Tornado had the first prototype beam of this kind back in 1975. This beam was made from about 1975 to late 1980s. The Tornado is more than likely to be Sailcraft made. This was Reg White's company and now his son Robert is trading under White Formula UK. We do not have any of these end caps anymore however I am told that we could make one. Kind regards

    Pete,
Will post the pics in the yahoo group, thanks for the advice.

    Edchriss,
Could You give me an address or telephone-number of John Osborn's shop?
As You said, they are very hard to find, nothing on the interweb. Thanks.

So, my T is more then likely a Sailcraft, building year between '75 and late '80's.
Next is contacting White Formula for some more info.

  • Thanks, Damon, I consider the restoration half done at the moment.
To many things to sort out after hull repair. Rigging, sails, blocks etc etc .
Having no vin-number is why I started this investigation , and now its just
fun to learn more about T's and my T especially .

Season is turning into Fall over-here, so hardtime for epoxy curing and that kind
of stuff. If the club let's me use the garage for a few weeks, I might get it on the water.
Last weekend of october is end of season at our club.

DamonLinkous! Will you get it on the water this year? icon_cool

We are at the IJselmeer, an inland sea/lake, North-sea season is over for a couple
of weeks already. So, north-sea crew comes to train/sail at the lake year round.

really enjoying this thread. There is an add in the classifieds for a mast and beams. Maybe contact him to see if there are end caps and if they are a match. Good luck.

If you call early in the day, Leah, the sailmaker usually picks up. She does wonderful work, at fair prices. I took a sail in a few weeks ago. She asked when I wanted it, as a joke I said 1/2 hour. She said, I can't do it in 1/2 hr, but if you come back in 1 1/2 hrs I'll have it!
I haven't seen John around the shop to much, but his wife is usually there. She is very friendly, helpful, & has got John on the line a few times to answer some rigging questions I had. Their son , Richard is involved with the business, though he may be out a lot as he does a lot of rigging.
Sailing season is ending here fairly quickly, they may be swamped with all the leaners bringing sails in.
It's such a pleasant experience dealing with them, low key, knowledgeable, & really care about sailing vs just moving product.
I don't believe John has been active with Cats for a few years now, not sure if he would have any leads on what you're looking for.
When I was searching for a T, I spent a good deal of overseas time reading through the T forum. There are a number of people there who are doing/did the same type project you are involved in.
There is a poster here, Earl White who resurrected a T.
Not sure what his moniker is, but if you search for the fairly recent thread where a couple of people mentioned Lake Pend Oreille, in Idaho, US he posted to that thread, & you could get his PM.

  • Sorry Guys,
Was called away from this project for a big work project , returning home,
a mishap in my personal life made me decide to postpone this project till spring.
    I'm fine though.
Fall has really kicked in and temps are below the magic 15 degr C number
necessary for working with epoxy .
I will keep my eye on a heated work-space this coming winter, but I don't
wanna drag the hulls around to much because they are so nice, and beautiful.
Stepping away from this project for a period also opened my eyes and
made me decide to remove all the balsa decks and do the "foam-deck"
treatment for the decks. It saves weight and leaves me with a virtually
new, less maintainance, proper T in the end. At least we know how
to build decks now icon_cool .

So, if any of You stil sailing... as Bob says "sheet in !!!"

  • I'm back !!
Finally temps are getting into the 13/17 Celsius range.
When looking at the hulls this winter, I discovered soft-spots in
the other front-deck too. Not as bad, but with the knowledge of
how to build a new deck. I decided to replace the other front-deck
    too.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-LGSUJEU6.jpg

So, started with the folie and dyke trick again.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-SXBXZRP4.jpg

First layer of glas, 5 more to go.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto-FQT6OJ4Y.jpg

Ran out of glass-fibre mat. Next layers gonna be 2 or 3 in
    one go.
    Keep you posted, again.

  • I must admit when these layers went wrong , I almost gave this
project up and ran away from it. If it wasn't for my mate cursing at
me and helping me with the T. Decided to start again.
Look what we did in the past 4 days.

First we had to build another front-deck.
    So, removed the rotten one.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Grotefoto-VIAE4PMW.jpg

Next, we put in a flange for the new deck, using strips of hard-
    wood and epoxy-pasta.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Grotefoto-MQ6ICJ6W.jpg

Made an upper-deck using 5 layers of 300 gram glas.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-RCYVHIQO.jpg

Cut out 3 layers of Corecell M-foam, precisely to fit in between
    the fixed flanges

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-FLX6DMNT.jpg

Next, we put a layer of plastic on the " good" hull, the plastic is
used for vacuum-bagging an won't stick to epoxy.
    When it"s cured.
On top of that, 3 layers of foam and the upper-deck.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Grotefoto-4EVOIRKL.jpg

Next, soaked it in epoxy and strapped it to the good hull to cure.
    Like this.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto550-V6M4KCN6.jpg

Time to glue the new deck into place, filling the flanges with
epoxy-pasta and add some slight pressure on the deck.
    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Grotefoto-AANLMPZ8.jpg

    Time for sanding and putty.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-BKSN8YYB.jpg

Then we painted the decks, I decided to paint the whole deck
with dark-grey antiskid paint. In my opinion it looks so much
better and quieter then some of the patterns you see on other
    tornados.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-3XNHKB7F.jpg

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-CNNFLI4G.jpg

Finally, we can start " building" instead of repairing...
    Feels so good !!
So, we started with the rudder-assembly, used a rudder and
a tape-measurer for alignment and made sure the whole
setup is waterproof with plenty of sikaflex compound.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Grotefoto-SHYRVDH4.jpg

Making holes in the newly made decks felt a bit strange, but
man ! They feel sturdy and stiff.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Grotefoto-4UUJQEQ3.jpg

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto540-VSZIA4IH.jpg

Monday is day of. And shop for some black inspection port-
    holes.
Then, beams and trampoline. Its starting to look like a sail-boat
    again. icon_smile

    @ Damon
Got them ! Because the T is quite old, the port-holes
were probably in imperial size. Not metric.
Found this small company in Holland which sells rare
sizes. Tomorrow I'll put them on the boat.

We moved to the US from Germany many years ago so I know the Ijsselmeer from frequent visits to the Netherlands. Sailing has been a more recent thing for me so I am curious to check out cat sailing in those waters some time - seems like it's a good place to cat sail. I may get in touch with you some time.

  • Damon was right,
A lot was not done before she really sailed...
    Broken daggerboards for example.

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto720-6MAQDPJC.jpg

But we fixed it, scraping them to the bear, replacing all the bronze
screws for ss ones, glued them together
and soaked the in epoxy. Next two layers of dd lacker for uv
    protection..

    http://www.mijnalbum.nl/Foto720-LOVFTUGX.jpg

Sailed the heck out of her, at least I thought I did..

First race was a 8 run , one weekend event...

    2 2
    3 DNF
    4 DnF

    5 dns
    6 last
    7 last
    8 last.

Hahaha what a bummer, every line was setup wrong, the whole boat,
and me were not ready to race.

A Tornado sailor at our club saw me struggling and took me out for a
    few runs.
We tweaked the setup and he explained me a lot about fat-head sailing.
Managed a 10 min. run between 23/25 knots with him icon_smile Awfull !!

No pictures or go pro footage, have to really rebuild the T for that.

Now, 25 october is mast down at our club, I'am gonna spend all spare
time to sail her as best as I can.
