Juanas is looking a bit soggy at the moment. The buoy races are supposed to start at 11:00 am (central). I don't see any sails up.

Ok, wow! Nice venue and spot to sail. Had a ball, despite Saturday's squall that came through. Quite the carnage... Since we were down the course, had no choice but to finish. Then the rain came, and then the wind! It was full on survival mode. We cranked it in, flattened everything and struggled for a bit. Hit 20 knots for about 30 seconds and settled into about 60 second patches of 18/19 knots on the way back, never really getting below about 10-12. Went from REALLY crappy start to 3rd, corrected I think. That old 21 was made for that stuff. Oh, this was with 3 rather "developed" guys. I wouldn't ever do that on purpose, don't having survived...was pretty intense. Had to backwind the main to keep it down. Lots of struggles to keep up with the very intense wind shifts. But, that ride back with the spray, waves crashing across the bow and absolutely flying was cool. Started out light, those first 5-10 miles, but once it turned on, man!
We sat out Sunday and played with our lovely brides, taking turns sailing down the sound and finally having a wonderful dinner out. Completely wiped.
Was it worth the 10 hour drive? Heck yes!
The pagodas did a great job accommodating everyone. Great job.

I'll echo what Charles said above. I drove 8 hours for the regatta from Memphis and it was my first time on my (new to me) Hobie 16 in saltwater. I loved the venue and will make it one of my yearly pilgrimages from now on. I have been sailing on small boats my whole life but picked up a H14 last October and added a H16 to my collection about 6 weeks ago. I opted to take the 16 because it is in better shape and the trailer was more road-worthy. We didn't have a bad start and kept up with the pack for most of the downwind leg but once the rain began, our visibility was severely reduced and we overstood our leeward mark by a lot and ended up almost to Pensacola Beach (Mark 131)
Then, the thunderstorm that had the waterspout hit us and the heavy winds, we could not stay vertical and went over. We couldn't get the boat rotated into the wind quickly enough and with the wind pushing on the trampoline, we were soon in turtle mode. We required assistance from the chase boat to get us unstuck from the bottom and the boat accelerated quickly once it was righted in the heavy winds and we were very fortunate to hop back on in time. The only damage to the boat was mud in the top of the mast/sheave and a missing jib batten that is in the bottom of the Santa Rosa Sound. We did have a nice steady breeze out of the SSE for a short time that allowed me to hang out on the trapeze for a short while. We did happen to see a boat being towed back so we felt fortunate to have survived our scary situation. When we did finally make it back to the beach (last boat I believe), some really nice sailors from Mobile, AL (Robert & Hendrick) helped us taking down the sails and rolling them up.
I believe I saw you Charles on your blue H21 with a drone following you on Sunday. I didn't race on Sunday because I didn't realize my sails wouldn't go up (MUD in the track) until it was too late to start. I did get some nice runs in on Sunday afternoon though and had a blast! Also, nice to meet you, Jerome!!

Enjoyed meeting you as well, Tim. Don't guess I met you, Chuck, but I do remember seeing that beast of a boat! Really missed visiting with you this year, Damon...hope you (THE Beachcat) are well.
We had a pretty good downwind run to GM 129, made the turn, and smoked it back (double-trapped 3/4 of the way) fast enough to stay ahead of the really bad conditions. The rain caught us a couple of times, and the thunder was too close for comfort sometimes, but no downpours or ballistic wind. That storm was wicked, and we were lucky that 129 was our turning mark. There's no way I would have sailed any further toward Pensacola...property damage and bodily injury are not included in my definition of a "Good Time"!

Yeah, next year going to have to leave the babes (wives) at the house, so we can socialize more and actually meet folks. It was difficult splitting attention between having 5 couples there along with attending the event, "properly". If nothing else, it sure gave me more confidence in the boat and marginal conditions!
Yeah, you couldn't see across the sound at times due to the white out from the rain and when at full speed you got the needles in your face like you were on a motorcycle.

Looking forward to Juana's 2023. This will be my 6th year attending and I'm getting a new (different) boat ready for this year. It's always a good time thanks to Juana and staff.
