Hello All,
Longtime lurker! First post...
Lot's of fun was had with my H16 (1980) this week, but, unfortunately, I just ripped the second set of sails at my disposal. of the 2 jibs and the 2 mains, only one jib is currently in proper shape.
The top eyelet of the jib popped Monday, the forestay remained intact (the jib cloth just lost tension up high, but the bottom half got merely a few more creases) so return to port was uneventful. So that is that, down to 1 jib.
Returning on the water Tuesday, the thread on the second panel on the main decided to let go, exposing the batten like a rib out of a yummy meal... Note to self: taking extra time to weave both eyelets with the batten makes for a continuous leach even if the panel rips and the sail remains half usable and controllable (15-18kts of wind). Batten flapping in the wind and a major hole in the middle of the sail, but overall everything staying mostly in place. Not bad to return to port, this time more slowly... But the main "main sail" is now out.
Then, my second mainsail is in a terrible shape. The luff rope is exposed at 2 battens (ran on duct tape for a while...) and the threads are generally breaking away as you look at them. Not even sure if I can risk rigging this.
It looks like sewing one main back from the remains of all this mess might work, but it is fair to say that these are all long gone and thread is now failing. For all I know, they could be vintage to the boat that was new to me in 2022 but with hulls dating back to 1980. Looks like adding strength to any part will transfer the load to the next available rip-in-the-making.
So, anybody knows how I can get my hands on a cheap main (or set of) sail(s) near Ottawa to finish the season for my H16? The rest of the boat has been repaired/maintained and is solid in all aspects. I see a lot of deals on complete boats in various price ranges, but I don't want a third boat (I also have a Prindle 16 on another lake, farther north...).
What do you guys say?
