Installing roller furler on my P16  Bottom

  • Hey guys,

Trying to install my roller furler on the P16. I'm quite newbie at this, so need some help.

Here's the roller furler that came with the boat:

Here's the cord that comes from my jib zip (on the right hand) and an extra cord on the left hand:

Here's me trying something to make it work. As you can see, while it works, it's not very smooth and looks unprofessional ;)

I don't have anything special mounted on the jib halyard. The basic P16 with the ring and the S hook that goes in it,

So what do you guys suggest to make it work on my boat? I've seen many pics, of different boats and technique, but a video would be very helpful for someone that is new to this.

    thanks.

  • mrprindle, as you may know already, the P16 does not normally have a furling jib, this is a mod done by some to make sailing easier. For the furling jib to work the sail must be attached to the jib wire head and tack using either shackles or cordage, otherwise when the drum spins, the forestay will spin with no furling effect. You have to do away with the prindle setup and go with a furler setup which consists of :-
    1) pigtail
    2) swivel
    3) wire luff (with sail pinned to wire top & bottom)
    4) furler drum

only then will you be able to furl the jib, but to get the boat on the water asap, just store the drum and sail with stock setup. I put this mod on both my P16 and my P18 and it is quite complicated as the forestay furler setup has to measure the same length as the stock setup.

  • Actually you can set a furler on a Prindle with a zippered luff just fine. I have run one on mine for several years. You just have to put the swivel above the upper forestay . I created a shorter upper forestay to compensate for swivel and drum. Jib is not hard mounted to the forestay it goes on like a normal Prindle zippered jib hooked at the top and down hauled at the bottom. The entire system is between swivel and drum though and rotates freely to furl and unfurl.
