Bigger than a Beach Cat, but a cat nonetheless  Bottom

  • Not sure this is of general interest, but I hope it is.

Hokulea and Hikianalia set sail on their worldwide voyage this morning:

Hokulea and Hikianalia are two Hawaiian voyaging canoes - forebears of the modern beach cat. They're built in the traditional manner, sailed in the traditional manner, and navigated in the traditional manner. The first leg is to sail south to Tahiti, repeating the 1976 journey that renewed interest in the Polynesian navigational methods that first brought settlers to the Hawaiian Islands.

You can track the progress of the two ships and learn more about the voyage here:

I'm just bummed I had to work today, and didn't get down to Hilo to see them off. I'll have to wait several years before I get the chance to see them again. Hopefully some of you will have the chance to see them before then.

  • I missed this when you posted but I'm interested! We actually have a member here CaptEdTeach (Lee Taylor) who traveled 7,000 miles on a Beneteau 50 support boat along with Hokulea and Maisu back in 2007.
