Leaving carbon mast up?  Bottom

  • Sorry about the newbie question.
Is it a mistake to leave a carbon mast rigged and up for 4-5 months in the sun and weather? I would take the precaution to bungee any lines away from it to keep them from slapping in the wind while stowed.
I am looking a cat with a carbon mast and just realized that my storage plan is to leave the mast up for the season. Should I reconsider the boat? I am really interested in a light weight boat.
    Thanks for any wise council.

  • I guess the jury is still out but I've had mine up for about 7 years and it's in great shape. Have at it.
  • It would be wise to paint it if it is not already painted. Sun will definitely degrade surface otherwise. Pete
  • I know the guys in San Diego have been doing this for years and have heard of any problems so far...

And, as Pete noted, you may want to paint it..

  • Great news... thanks for the experienced comments. I suppose the sun degrades everything over enough time. Sounds like there is no immediate concern. I'll look it sealing it to protect it. pbegle, do you have ant ideas about a paticular product?
I'll keep looking at cats with carbon masts.
    Thanks again comrades.
