Reply to: Yet another rookie 5.2 owner
Jon, I can't comment on where to put the boat in but I can comment on flying a hull. For the first little while make sure you sit near the rear beam and keep your crew just aft of the daggerboard. You will drag the transoms a bit but that is better than stuffing the bows until you get used to the boat. Flying the hull is usually a transient thing with the 5.2 when you are beginning, you go up and then drop ralatively quickly. The goal is to keep the windward hull just above the water so you aren't heeling too badly but you get rid of the drag from the hull. Wear gloves! When reaching or beating keep the mainsheet uncleated and one or two loops of mainsheet wrapped around your hand. If you fly too high (45 degrees to the water), release a loop or two and you will drop immediately. Keeping a hull above the water consistently requires a bit of a tightrope balancing act, small smooth changes to the mainsheet and your position are the key, the minute you quickly dump sheet the hull will drop. You will also likley find that you will feel uncomfotably high even though you are just getting the hull out of the water that is something to get used to. You can also recover from when the hull goes up really high by dumping sheet and hiking out. Keep that butt near the edge of the hull and your feet under the straps so you can adjust the balance easly. Hope that helps. And this is officially my 1000th post!!! I am now a Chief Muahahahaha. Back to your regularly scheduled forum. :) D.Edited by Wolfman on Aug 21, 2011 - 07:30 PM.
