Kudos

Just finished reading "On the Wire" - Great job! I liked the porthole article and am planning to install some in mine. Keep up the good work!

Bill and Frank,
Excellent magazine! I really enjoyed all the articles, how-to's, and other interesting parts of it. Good luck with its success.

Bill,
Congratulations on a great addition to Hobie online sailors. Since I never seem to get to sail for real any more, I really enjoy getting to cyber sail with you and 9-digits. Thanks for doing this!
Best wishes and let me know if you want me to write about tiller connectors, trailering, or jib halyards [in your humor area].

Bill/Frank,
Great job on the web site. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Thanks to all for the compliments. It makes all the work that much more worthwhile. Maybe this thing is going to work after all.

Slow Response

Bill,
Nice newsletter-

Extremely slow on a 14.4 modem - did you know that? That is what most of the population is using.

I have found through much study and by doing the same mistakes on my own site:

Put all the graphics in your directory and don't use the whole file name each time - instead of http://www.whatever/whatever/graphics/whatever use../graphics/whatever (it loads faster this way)

Try gif transparent interlaced graphics for much faster loading. If you don't like the graphic quality, and just have to have jpeg graphics, try lowering the resolution. 72 dpi is the standard for computer screens.

You are not the only ready who has noted the slow response. Maintenance on the site is usually performed either over a 28.8 modem, or a 10mb LAN. Since receiving your email, I have connected with a 14.4 modem, and agree: It's really slow.

All of the graphic files are referenced without a path, but are stored as jpgs using "good" compression since our graphics software does not support gif transparent interlaced files. Thanks for noting that the files were stored at 100dpi, which was in error. This issue contains 72dpi images, except for the cover page.

The server on which On The Wire resides is being upgraded in the next few weeks. Hopefully, this will also increase the response time.

Suggestions such as these are very much appreciated. I welcome any ideas on how to improve the site.
