Reporting: Hobie 17 - Back from the Dead

Added by damonAdmin on Feb 25, 2004 - 03:03 AM

It's official, the Hobie 17se, recently declared dead by the Hobie Company, has been brought back to life. Read the announcement from Doug Scidmore, President of Hobie.

Several months ago the Hobie Cat Company made an announcement that the Hobie 17 would no longer be produced at our Oceanside, California facility anda final few boats were to be manufactured at our Australia facility and then stopped there as well. At the time the decision was made many of us were reluctant to make it knowing that the Hobie 17 racing class would be effected by it. The Hobie 17 has been like a good friend over the years and saying goodbye was difficult. For those who have sailed it they understand that it is a very nice sailboat.

In the last few months we have discussed this decision with many Hobie sailors and have received many emails and letters. We have been presented with some compelling comments and arguments to continue building this boat. One of the strongest arguments is the need of a single-hand class to remain in the Hobie Class Association of North America. Due to the overwhelming response from the sailors and our desire to support the Hobie Class Association we have decided to reinstate the Hobie 17 into production.

The molds are being pulled back out and we are currently in the process of placing orders for mast extrusions, crossbars and other necessary components of the boat. Our anticipation is that we will have production of the Hobie 17 available by sometime in July of this year. Our hope is to have boats available prior to the Hobie 17 North American Championship in Monterey, California on July 19-23 though this will be a tall order due to our already busy production schedule. A limited supply may be available for the event.
