Reporting: Great Texas Catamaran Race, South Padre Island, Texas

Added by damonAdmin on Jan 17, 2004 - 06:29 PM

The 2nd Great Texas Catamaran Race will be held as on Father’s Day week. The race will start in South Padre Island on June 16 and finish on Galveston Island on June 20.

The Great Texas is a 300 mile off-shore beach catamaran race held in four legs. Racers start and finish on the beach. The four legs have the distances of 100, 100, 70 and 30. Last year’s inaugural race was a great success and everyone is excited about sailing the Texas coast again.
An official Notice of Regatta will be posted on the PI Sailing web site by February 1. Registration will also be open at this time. Registration will be $99 for early birds that register by mid-February. Registration will progressively increase after that time, so register early. (We try to make the race a very affordable race – most teams camp on the beach thus making it possible to sail this race on a very modest budget.)

We expect a good crowd of racers this year. At this point, we have verbal commitments from 10 teams for the race. Almost all teams from last year’s race will be returning.

June is a beautiful time for sailing in Texas. It is warm but not too hot. The sea breeze is guaranteed to kick in and supply great wind for a downwind-reaching run from South Padre to Galveston.

The race will be open to experienced sailors/racers. The boats must carry a spinnaker, be 18-21 feet, production boat, beam no greater than 8.5 feet with no wings. Thus I-20, Hobie Tiger, Jav, Nacra 6.0 with spin, Miracle with Spin and Prindle 19 with a spin may be used.

For $99 you get accommodations (camping on the beach), transportation (your road crew can ride in the back of a pickup track) and a charter boat (a sunfish with a spinnaker) if desired. I also guarantee that I will refund your money if the race is cancelled. However, since there is no major monetary incentive for canceling the race, I will guarantee you that the race will happen!

My only personal disappointment is that Alter Cup has been scheduled for this same time period. We looked at alternative dates to get around this conflict only to run into other conflicts. In the end, we had little choice but to keep the event as scheduled.

I invite everyone to join us at this race and to sail the beautiful Texas coast.
