Trailer

A collection of photos we made while refurbishing the trailer we got with our Pacific Catamaran, and some of the improvements we made to the trailer along the way.

Our trailer was of the "bare steel and rust" variety when we bought it. Now it's of the "bare steel, Ospho, and coal tar paint" variety. Almost every square inch of it is covered in Zophar, a coal tar based paint.

The boat's name is Smilodon (extinct cat... right?) So the trailer's name is Labrea. Because it's covered in ta... Oh never mind. The humor's there.

Smilodon on Trailer

Smilodon sitting on its completed trailer.

In addition to a fresh coat of Zophar paint, the trailer got a new upright to support the mast. Like the rest of the trailer, it's made out of quarter inch wall steel. The previous owner had cut...

Ready-for-Lights

Our newly painted trailer, reassembled and ready for finishing touches. One of the first finishing touches is to add a light kit.

Another glaring omission is the upright at the front of the trailer to support the mast. This is being welded,...

Pacific Catamaran on Rusty Trailer

Pacific Catamaran on Rusty Trailer

This is how the boat and trailer arrived: the hulls needed a ton of work, and the trailer was rusted everywhere rust could form.

But the trailer was made from 1/4" wall steel, so it was still solid. We chose to refurbish it rather than...

Trailer-Painted

Trailer-Painted

After unloading the boat into the yard and stripping all the bits off the trailer, we treated it with Ospho over the course of several days. The rust took a while to convert to iron phosphate.

Once the rust was converted we painted it with ...
