Hobie 14 Autopsy of Soft Spot Repair Great Stuff

I had the opportunity to saw through and exam the deck delamination repair or soft spot repair of a Hobie 14 reconstructed five years earlier. The area was ahead of the forward pylon, and had been repaired on both sides. The boat was being trashed after damage to the rear hull. I tried stomping my foot through the repair on the right side before examining the left. Both sides had good residual rigidity. A retired engineer had repaired this, his personal boat five years ago. He drilled quarter inch holes two inches apart, and filled the space between the two layers of fiberglass with Great Stuff foam. He then applied one layer of fiberglass cloth over the holes and epoxied in place for repainting. The repair in some areas was up to two inches thick. The Great Stuff foam was solid and well adherent to the fiberglass and original construction foam in the deck sandwich.
