Spin on a P-16?

So a have a symmetrical spin that came with the newest boat, is it an option to run it up on the P16?
no center line so rigging would be a bit less than ideal.
Ideas?

I was thinking about rigging my p16 with a spinnaker as well. I wonder how the boat would perform with it?
Bridal spreader or not? I think it would go like mad, my question is..can it handle the added stress without diamond wires?

I've seen a guy putting a spi on his Dart 18, it has no spreaders or diamond
wires. And he didn't do anything to reinforce the mast.
He went out a few times in light winds and he was fine.
Then he got caught in a stiff breeze and when he released the mainsheet
the mast broke just above the point where the stays attach..

any boat can break there too if you dump the main with the spin out.

the main acts like a backstay.... dump that under heavy load and somethings gonna give.... maybe a mast, maybe some other slightly weaker link in your system..

start with a new square top main first...it overpowers my p16 big time. I love it, but I still have not been able to sheet the traveler in and trim the sail in winds over 8-9 kts.. it really is like putting a 400 in the vega!

What will a Square top run me? Do you get a new jib too? Same size?

3 people on boat...no trap. have not gotten around to install wires since I painted it. we were pointing up sailing out of the bay in a 10 mph wind and not only was the traveler half out but the main was almost luffing...full steam ahead. I let my buddy's girlfriend skipper us up and down the beach in calmer waters and it BLEW her mind!...first time on a cat and what a ride icon_eek

hard to believe you can't fully sheet in with 3 on board.
are you sure you didn't get an america's cup sail by accident?

my most recent main was about $1500 - custom cut, FLEX Techora 11 (sail cloth)

YES you want a new jib ... a brand new suite of sails is the best xmas gift ever! a new jib would run me about $750

P16 sails (of similar material) should be 10 - 20 % cheaper i would think, much cheaper if you buy dacron (i wouldn't ever again)
new main and jib decked out was around 1800$. it was the same price no matter what material I wanted... I got Dacron because I can sew it, and it last a long time. they came with tapered battens. I can't wait to put the traps on again...as far as downwind is concerned, I do like the Americas cup boats and tack downwind... I would be scared to put a spin on my boat now, the mast is already loaded up pretty good.

A square-top will give you a bit more power but not nearly as much as an asymmetrical spin going downwind. Your sails are in nice conditions, not blown and looking good. So unless you have 2k to burn, this would be a hard to justify upgrade.

my new square top set is a lot more powerful...I can point higher and sail much faster in any wind than the old ones. I would put diamond wires on if you put a spin on. new/modern sails will transform that boat...trust me!

Nothing wrong with dacron. its just not the right cloth choice for me

I wouldn't buy dacron because i sail a lot and in some heavy air.. they last forever but in the fl sun and the way i sail... they don't keep tight and responsive long enough.

I prefer to buy other materials that don't last as long but keep their shape until they are really "done" or get torn with a crew member diving threw them in a capsize

QuoteP16 sails (of similar material) should be 10 - 20 % cheaper i would think, much cheaper if you buy dacron (i wouldn't ever again)
if I were on a more modern boat I would get a more high tech material for sure... 95% of my sailing is cruising/happy hour/bikini gathering stuff. folks have told me that they would like a lighter material for racing and I get that, if I really wanted to lighten up the boat, I could stand to lose 40lbs or so!

I looked into spin for my boat and chose the new set instead. no regrets at all, it was better than I expected by far. it's a classic hot rod now icon_cool
