got tunes?

We're long overdue for tunes on the Mystere. After seeing my good friend Andrew burn through 10 or so portable Walmart radios stuffed in a drybag (in the last 3 years) I've decided that's definitely not the way to go. So I'm looking to the forum's help for ideas. I'd like a music system that does the following:

- Connects to an ipod shuffle
- Has a remote because I'm musically ADD
- Is waterproof and will last more than a season

Anyone have any ideas? What are you using?

Thanks in advance!
Dave's H21 is the way to go!
dry cell in the hatch, speakers on the spreaders facing down (not sure 10lbs bose are the way to go), subwoofer facing back
illuminated dragon on your front tramp
lights above and below the waterline....

Maybe Jsi will give us a buy 1 get 1 free deal :)

That's a little overkill for me.
Is that a Barge or a Cat?? I'm looking for the trailer hitch - there's got to be one!

I've heard some decent things about the EGO waterproof dock. A number of companies sell them under various names. Haven't gotten one yet though.

Headphones. Please.

Although, come to think of it, the subwoofer might be just the thing to push the H16 up to the wind-shadowed dock at the local park.
I suppose headphones are great if you're an a-cat sailor. I load bodies and beer.

4 hours of online screwing off at work and this is all I can come up with:

http://www.rocktheboataudio.com/html/53946.html with the control face mounted to the boom with waterproof quick-connects for electrical.

Powered by this http://www.cabelas.com/p-0036388018049a.shtml

Then just mount some low profile waterpoof speakers to the beam or something.
Oh, Murray's sells waterproof headphones and MP3 cases. So does H20 Audio. Several of my friends who are into swimming use SWimp3 headphones that actually conduct the sound through the bones just in front of your ear. Apparently the sound quality of these varies from person to person though.

mine works great. its lacking bass, which is understandable, but i can actually toss it in the ocean and it keeps pumping floating alongside the cat. I keep the remote in a drybag necklace. it goes longer than i do on a set of batteries.. and gets plenty loud.

I throw a http://www.kiwichoice.com/portable-chargers/kiwi-u-powered
in the box to keep my phone powered because i also use it to log my gps coordinates and that drains the battery.

Dave, I like it! So the AirClick works through the box pretty well?
Yeah. it only goes ~10ft once its in the box, but my tramp isnt any bigger than that ;) I actually have an older model of the air click i found at my work so ymmv!

edit: also should mention that i tried it initially with some 20$ marine speakers from the place listed, thinking that the ocean would destroy them and thusly everything inside. Fortunately they held up perfectly (from what i can see) and so im ordering some higher quality marine speakers. ill post some pics of the reconstruction when they get in if anyone is interested.

Most importantly... where does one find those side-stay cup holders?

Ken

Wow, I missed that! I was more concerned/horrified by the speedo, gloves and rubber boots!

So I just made one of these and it works great. One change I did, was to use a Monster remote control, http://www.monstercable.com/productdisplay.asp?pin=3714
Mainly because it's naturally water resistant but it did take a bit of filing of the headset plug to get the headset plug in the jack.
I used a pelican 1400 case with two 5" round speakers mounted on the lid. The whole things works as advertised. It's really cool.

Vintage, got pics? I ended up getting a Dewalt Worksite radio/charger which runs on a lithium ion 18.1volt battery. That's good for about 2 days of sailing/music before recharging. It's mildly water resistant but I wouldn't want to submerge the thing.

http://www.dewalt.com/too…radio-charger-dc011.aspx
Isn't there a small waterproof case for an Ipod that some sailors mount on the boom? This case is clear and has build in waterproof speakers with high quality sound and the controls are accessible without opening it.

I was thinking of cannibalising a job site radio like the ryobi I bought from home depot for $29. The radio is very loud, ipod compatable and runs all day of a single charge using power tool batteries that I already have.
I took a T-amp and made a semi water-tight enclosure, and hung it in a cat bag inspection port storage bag thing. Then removed the rear inspection ports, bored out the holes a bit, faired myself a platform, and mounted marine speakers. I ran speaker wire through the rear beam, under the bulkhead, and up to the amp, using a trailer hitch harness for the disconnectable wires, and mounted a marine switch in the top of the forward inspection port. 8 rechargable double A's and any mp3 player of choice lasts more than a weekend. The boat also spent plenty of time on its side, with only the cones of the marine speakers keeping it from sinking, and remarkably, it never had issue. Hell, it would just keep on singing.

A buddy of mine took a video of it last summer...It's posted on FB but I've got no idea how to pull a vid from there. For those of you I'm 'friends' with, I put a link on my profile -- you should be able to see it.

Now there's the next big Cat upgrade. And I'll tell yo all never be able to cash in on it myself oh well. We need to be able to replace the inspection port lids with built in marine speaker with their own power packs set in the back of the lid. They should be bluetooth compatible and talk to each other wireless as well. One side could even have a waterproof snap in site for a IPod nano or something that would let you control it.

Sounds cool. Couldnt you mount the speakers ON the decklids somehow? so you didnt have to modify the decks?
No, the speakers would be inaudible without some sort of enclosure. They also wouldn't stand up to the elements being fully exposed.

The hulls work great as an enclosure, and with some fairing the speakers fit perfectly.

Check this out, a wireless remote that is submersible to 12 feet! It works with steroe that use an infared eye for the OEM remote. Does any know if all stereo remotes ae infared?

Yurdle - Brilliant! I now have a project next winter. If you will at some point list the speaker brand you used since they are validated to seal the port on a "roll". Did you hang the mp3 player inside the cat bag with the T-amp as well??

This is too cool....

When I chose the speakers, I opted for cheap, b/c to me that meant 'replaceable'....sadly it never occurred to me that at the point I'd damaged a speaker I'd have likely sunk the boat as well.

I used Boss MR50W...they were even cheaper at the time.

Yep, I just drop the mp3 player into the bag with the amp. I pulled the amp out of it's housing (the standard funky trapezoid shape most T-amps come in) and put it in a radioshack hobby box, and ran the battery pack wire through the marine switch I mounted in the inspection port cover.

I leave the MP3 player (usually a sansa clip) on about 3/4 volume the whole time as I can't access the amp volume, and then use the kill switch on the cover as necessary.

I got one of these:

Way more lo-fi, but it's cheap and does the job. I stick my droid in it, turn on pandora, and let it play all day.

How's the sound on that unit? Does it loud enough? and how long do the batteries last?

Hey I like the looks of this thing, I couldn't tell by the Amazon description, does it have it's own batteries? Otherwise seems like it would run the phone down pretty quick.

gcamickFlaco,

I've only had it out once, but a fresh set of AA's still had juice after about 3 hrs. The sound is not great, but a little better than I expected (I keep my expectations low on stuff like this). It's never loud enough, but turned all the way up, it was a good volume for a leisure cruise.
