This 2002 Hobie Cat 18 was built 2 years before Hobie stopped building the 18. That, along with the fact that it has had one owner and was only sailed a few times per year on lakes and never raced, means it will be hard to find a Hobie 18 with less wear and tear. It has been stored in a garage or under a carport for virtually its entire life. The jib has a sleeve (snorkel) for protection during storage.
It has the SX-style wings (longer version), giving more righting moment, more comfortable seating, and more room for crew. We have easily sailed with 6 adults; more is no problem. With the 2 trapezes, it can really fly! The wings can be removed, if desired. It has one trapeze harness.
It has the Hobie Bob mast float to keep the boat from turtling when capsized. The Easy Rite righting system makes recovery from a capsize simple and fast. It has a righting bag to increase the righting moment during single-handed recovery from a capsize.
It has a purpose-built trailer with sailbox to store the main sail, tiller, dagger boards, and Hobie Bob. The trailer has a winch and block to help with stepping the mast single-handed. A gin pole is included for stepping the mast. The trailer has bearing buddies and a spare tire.
It has a custom bracket for easily and non-destructively mounting a small trolling motor with battery to the dolphin strike (see photos). It has a range of approximately 5 miles, allowing longer voyages without risk of stranding if the wind dies. The motor also helps with docking. The motor can be easily stowed without interfering with the jib.
