About the place:
If Lake Amistad was in California, it would be surrounded by condos. The lake is 88,000 acres of clear blue located on the Mexican border with Texas. IF YOU ARE MILITARY, you have it made! Laughlin AFB has the most beautiful marina, camping, rest facilities in Texas. From there you can sail on one tack for about 20 miles. The Tlaloc restaurant is 5 miles away directly across the dam from the Laughlin marina. They serve cerveza, pescado fresca, and hamburguesa. Lunch for 25 hungry/thirsty (heh, heh) Hobie sailors has never run us more than $95.00. Except for the fact that they don't serve Margaritas, you'd swear you were in Margaritaville. You get to Lake Amistad by driving 150 miles west of San Antonio on Hwy 90 to Del Rio. When you get to the middle of town (don't blink), turn right and follow Hwy 90 another 30 miles to the lake. When I say the beach and launch facilities are fair, that means there is no beach (except rocks) and no launch facilities other than power boat launches - unless you go to Mexico. Tlaloc has a nice beach but I wouldn't want to camp there, because there are no facilities for people with intestines or bladders, so guess where they go. Basically, the word is to find a military person to go with and camp at the Laughlin Marina. And don't count on rangers or lifeguards. On 88,000 acres they can have a national fishing tournament and 6 regattas and you never have to get within a mile of another boat. Because of all the little nooks and crannies, Lake Amistad has a coastline nearing the length of the California coastline and a (winding) length approaching 80 miles.
