About the place:
WIND: Too much if anything. Wind is off shore so return to the beach or launch is a beat. It is common to see 20-30 knots daily. Wind reliably starts before noon and builds throughout the day until sunset when it subsides. WATER: Salt, within a 100 sq. mile harbor that has wind waves, but no surf. A two mile boat ride to the entrance where wide open ocean awaits your venture. There are windsurfers doing about 30 or knots, PWC's doing their usual stuff, and lots of boats. Every kind of boat imaginable including cruise ships and freighters who have limited maneuverability so watch out! LAUNCH: Substandard. There is usually a wait line and only one dock. If you are ready to set sail, you can cut the line and launch away from the dock as the ramp is wide enough for three or four boats with trailers. You could launch, sail off and make a U-turn for the beach. You can roll your boat if you have the beach rollers and it is a convenient distance to do so. It is roughly 100 yards of sloping sand. BEACH: A peninsula, there is a nice ocean beach a short walk away. The sailing beach is on the harbor side of the peninsula, by the parking lot and launch ramp. Nice sand, but blowing sand in this quite windy area. Restrooms, picnic tables, shade trees on grass, cast iron bbq's, (fire rings on ocean side beach I think?), fishing off jetties, bodysurfing in ocean, (I think there are at least outdoor showers), and a very delightful free/donation marine museum that is of the best this So. CA native has seen. Adult beverages not tolerated on beach, but consumable at picnic areas if kept discrete. TRAFFIC: What can I say? It is Los Angeles. I find this spot to be as easy or easier to get to than most. DIRECTIONS from Downtown Los Angeles: Go South on #110 (The Harbor Freeway) until nearly the end where you will see signs directing you to the Harbor Blvd. exit. These signs will have you take the Terminal Island Freeway #47 East bound and exit before the giant Terminal Island Bridge. Exit Harbor Blvd. and proceed South on Harbor. At the end, turn right and go West on W. 22nd St. a few blocks to S. Pacific Av. where you will turn left and proceed South on Pacific to W. 36th St. Turn left and go East on 36th where 36th is named after someone who I can not remember. Continue one block and fork to the left and you will be there. Pay $8 to a live attendant. You can pay for long term parking in advance and leave your car and trailer there if you put your receipt on the dash. This can be handy for people going to Catalina Island for an extended stay. RESTAURANTS: There is a place just east of the corner of 22nd St. and Harbor Blvd. called Ports O' Call village. Several restaurants and shops. For fresh fish to take home, inexpensive sea food dinner, and the best deal on a jumbo Scallop dinner I've seen, try The Crusty Crab. Their salad bar (incl. with meals) For a more elegant, modern, tidy, spacious atmosphere try the restaurant that is on 22nd, near the corner of Harbor. I think the name is 22nd St. Landing, not sure but you will see a neon seafood sign. It is on the top, second level of a building just east of the sportfishing place.
