About the place:
Biscayne Bay is a wide/long bay protected from the Atlantic coast by Key Biscayne and assorted keys (Sand Key, Boca Chita, Elliott Key to name a few). There's a beach known as "Hobie Beach." To get there, you need to get to Rickenbacker Causeway into Key Biscayne, pass the bridge and turn right immediately after the bridge. Many families congregate to have barbecues therefore limiting the parking. In order to back up your trailer right on the beach you need to get there at least by 9:00 a.m. It's the only place in Miami you can launch a boat from a sandy beach. And, sadly, it's the only place where catamaran sailors congregate on the weekends and share stories and beer. There are no facilities such as restrooms, public phones or lifeguards. There are people that stroll the beach selling odds and ends to eat or drink. The bottom is kind of rocky for about two feet. Most guys/gals use pvc tubes or cat wheels to launch their boat in the water. I, for instance, just back up my trailor in the water after stepping the mast and float the boat off. It's a great sailing area, the winds are tricky because they shift close to shore. There are lots of sand bars to stop on low tide and 3 or 4 cafes or restaurants to tie up and have a good meal or a tropical drink. If you start out early you can even make it to Key Largo (the Upper Keys) in one day. Hopefully, this information will serve to bring more sailors out here. We are dwindling to a mere 10 to 15 between Hobies, Prindles, Super Cats and even a beautiful Dart. Try to make it out here. If you don't like the sailing, you can always try our great party city and Miami Beach!!!
