Repairing Separated Hull/Deck Joint on Hobie 16

By Sonny Barber

Invert the hull on two padded saw horses. Clean all of the silicon out of the void. Use a wood chisel to carefully remove any loose factory sealant/bonding material. Finely cut some fiberglass mat for a filler. The cut strands should be no more than 1/4 inch long. Mix with epoxy to form a thick paste. Using a tongue depressor or popsicle stick, tamp mixture well down into the void. Over fill >slightly. Clamp just enough to restore the contour. Do not over clamp, this will distort the lip. When epoxy in in the "green cure" (not tacky, but not fully cured) stage, trim flush with a sharp knife and sand edge. Clean up with acetone. You're done.
