Vol 3 - Issue 3 November 1998

Bill Mattson

That nippy morning air is starting to say it's near the end of the sailing season. I may get out the heavy gear and try and extend it, but it's tough to get in the mood when that cold wind is blowing here in southern California. You folks in the snow belt are probably yelling at me right now. Okay, okay.... I'll try and get out there this winter.

With the off season comes the usual article shortage, but we've still managed to get some really good stuff from some of the regular contributors.

William Wallick provides coverage of this year's Hobie 20 Continentals. While the conditions were dissapointing, it sounds like it was a well run event. (Who's the guy pictured with the cool pickup truck boat mount. I gotta get me one of those!)

As we expand our coverage to all makes of small cats, Mark Dawson introduces us to an unconventional "concept" catamaran called the Batcat. I'm sure many will find as interesting as I did. Some may be interested enough to purchase the hull molds which, according to the article, are for sale. Anybody want to grab the ball on this one?

Also this month, Chris Bolton gives his account of the 150 mile Down the Bay Race. And I thought all of Chris' adventures took place during the drive to the race!

Speaking of adventures, did you hear about the world record attempt by the youngest sailor ever to circumnavigate the earth? This month, our update on Jesse Martin tells how to follow this voyage on the internet.

Some of you may have already wrapped up your boats for the season. Time to get at that keyboard and tell us of your adventures. Let's keep On The Wire going on a monthly basis!

Well, I didn't do any sailing since the last editorial I wrote. Sure hope those of you in the warmer regions have been able to do so. Gotta take some of this money I'm getting from programming to buy me a new wetsuit. Murray's here I come!

Here's hoping the folks in St. Lucia and our friends in Florida have made it through these last couple of stormy months. Need to take an extended vacation down there and do some serious boat time. Hope the days have been good to you.

Unfortunetly, the Good Bill did not tell me what's in this issue, so it'll be a treat for all of us! I'm pretty sure I'm not getting hurt in this issue, cause I'm not in an emergency ward at this time.

Happy Reading...
