Vol 3 - Issue 1 October 1998

Bill Mattson

We're back on a monthly schedule. Well sort of. I tried to hit the first of the month, but my "real job" keeps getting in the way. Anyway, here's the October issue, better late than never. An another great issue it is!

If you've got a boat with a loose frame or pylons like mine, and really want to boost boat performance, check out the article I've been waiting for. Scott Willcox shows us how to epoxy the frame of a Hobie 16 in his illustrated guide this month. I'll be referring to this one before next racing season.

Two years ago, our premier issue included an illustrated guide to installing deck ports. This month, William Wallick provides a similar guide, but uses closed cell foam instead of silicon. Check this one out for a cleaner job, and one that provides port lids that float.

Last month, Kim Miller provided an article on the causes and effects of Weather Helm. This month, Kim tells us what to do about it. If your tiller feels like an elephant on a leash, this article will show you how to make sailing easier on the arm.

Some of you may be aware of the controversy surrounding the issue of waxing hulls. While it makes the boat look nice and protects the finish, some will argue that wax has effects which actually slow the boat down. Chris VanEpps provides an excellent essay on why to dismiss this argument. If this article does not put the issue to rest, at least it will put some education into the arguments.

Rob Morse is back this month with an account of the Inland Transpac in San Francisco. This one sounds like fun. I may check this one out myself next year.

As always, I sincerely thank all of our contributors this month. I could never get the site to this level on my own. I also thank the advertisers, all of which have expressed the interest in keeping the site up and available to you. Please patronize them and mention where you saw their ad.

Keep this stuff coming. I'll keep staying up late gettin' it on the 'net!

Sail fast, sail safe,

Well, if your reading this, you possibly have found your way here from our new URL, http://www.catsail.com. This change will make it easier for us to keep all the archives in one place, and improve our traffic. It's hard to believe this E-zine has been around since September, 1996. Thank's to all the help from our guest writers, our content remains topical and timley. Now that our soccer tournament is over (and very sucessfull), we can get back to our real passion...sailing!

This month we have an article about glueing up the frame of an H16 for strength (very good), and an article about installing hull ports. Some little trick about placing foam under the lids too, so you can find them again. A month ago, my starboard hull port literally came apart at a manufacturing joint. To make a long story short, my son manages to sink half the boat when he flipped over. Now my port lid is somewhere on the bottom of Lake Castaic. So where was this article when I installed my ports?

Enjoy the issue, and if you find a black hull port at the lake, send it my way!

Is Kim Miller really the only one who noticed last month's blatant misspelling right on our cover? Evidently this was an issue dedicated to sailors who hunt down calamari.

Next Month:

Hobie 20 Continentals
Jesse Martin's Circumnavigation Attempt
Down the Bay Race
